17½ Dozen Eggs. One Stronger Community. 🥚

A few weeks ago, we shared about the large egg donation from Vap Farms . That generosity is already making a meaningful impact.

Through our Eggs to Donate Initiative, 17½ dozen fresh eggs were delivered to OpenDoor. They are one of eight nonprofit partners receiving eggs, helping strengthen the meals served to clients experiencing food insecurity here in Wichita.

Eggs are simple, versatile, and packed with protein. For many nonprofits, consistent access to quality protein can be a challenge. Donations like this help ensure meals are not just filling, but nourishing.

We are grateful for partners like Vap Farms who continue to help good food find its purpose.

🐔 Annual Chicken Laying Cycle 📅

1️⃣ Spring – Peak egg production as days get longer and warmer. Hens are active, healthy, and at their strongest.

2️⃣ Summer – Laying stays strong, but extreme heat can slow output. Provide shade and fresh water to maintain production.

3️⃣ Fall – Molting season begins. Hens often stop laying and focus energy on growing new feathers. Increase protein in their diet.

4️⃣ Winter – Egg production drops sharply or pauses. Hens conserve energy and need protection from cold and moisture.

TEN YEARS.💙

In 2016, Stephanie Merritt began picking up surplus meals herself with one simple belief: good food should nourish people, not landfills.

What began as a grassroots effort quickly grew into a citywide movement.
For 10 years, ICT Food Rescue has shown up.

Week after week, more than 100 food rescues take place across Wichita. Local businesses share their unavoidable food surplus. Volunteers step forward. Our 19 nonprofit receiving agencies welcome deliveries with open arms serving the food insecure of Wichita.

It is not one person. It is a community.
Ten years later, we are still showing up together.

🥚💛 From Farm to Community 💛🥚

These surplus eggs were generously shared by Vap Farms , with Jeff and Parker helping ensure good food stayed in circulation and reached neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Through our Eggs To Donate Initiative, part of ICT Food Rescue’s Food Recovery Program, this one donation became a meaningful source of protein for our community.

In the weeks ahead, we will be sharing how this single donation was distributed to 8 nonprofit receiving agencies, each using it in ways that best meet the needs of the people they serve.

This is what food recovery looks like when local partners lead with care. We are grateful to be part of a community that believes food is meant to be shared.
