As we continue our feedyard jobs mini-series, next up is the processing crew. The processing crew plays a key role in cattle health and well-being from day one at the feedyard.

A processing crew’s main responsibility is to assist with the safe and efficient handling of cattle during processing.

Here’s what that looks like:
🐮 Sorting, weighing and moving cattle
🐮 Administering vaccines and other health products according to protocol
🐮 Applying identification tags and recording important information
🐮 Working alongside crew members to ensure cattle are properly processed and cared for

Their attention to detail and teamwork help ensure cattle are set up for success from day one, supporting both animal health and overall feedyard performance🐄

What a great day at Southern Livestock yesterday! We hosted the TCU Ranch Management class for a tour and had some incredible conversations about the feedyard and cattle industry. They asked thoughtful questions and showed a true passion. It’s always a privilege to share our story with those working toward becoming the next leaders in agriculture. From one Aggie family to the Horned Frogs — thanks for spending the day learning about our operation. (Gig ’em anyway! 👍🏼)

Thanks to for capturing one of the windrowers in action at the ranch! At Southern Livestock, LLC, we’re proud to grow much of our own feed and source the rest locally to support our cattle backgrounding program. We also offer our custom feed ration for sale—if you’re interested, give us a call! Always great to see the hard work get noticed, especially with equipment we trust. ✅

Today is . It’s a national day of celebration. But for farmers and ranchers, every day is Earth Day.

They care for the land and resources. They care for their crops and livestock. They care for their families, too. All 365 days a year.

And being a farmer and rancher means shaking hands with Mother Nature. Because the sun, soil and water are their business partners.

Today, they’ll tip their caps in salute to the good earth and keep growing the food that sustains us all. Because for farmers and ranchers, every day is Earth Day.

Proud to partner with the Texas Angus Association - Luling Foundation for their Field Day! We were honored to host them at our family-owned and operated cattle backgrounding facility in Gonzales, TX. Our feed yard manager, Thomas, gave a behind-the-scenes tour of our receiving and preconditioning barn, sharing our innovative approaches to low-stress cattle care and what we look for when purchasing cattle.

As cattle feeders, we are serious when it comes to sustainability. Here are just some things that we do:

🌎 We use collected water to irrigate pastures to grow grass to assist in the taking care of livestock
🌎 We are composting manure and other organic materials to create nutrient-rich fertilizers for local farmers
🌎 We are sourcing feed from sustainable and environmentally responsible suppliers. For example, we are using feed made from drought-tolerant crops and crop residues, reducing the demand on water and land resources. Those same crops are fertilized with the recycled manure and other organic materials helping to make better feed for cattle
