From seed to feed. 🌽

At Southern Livestock, we don’t just feed cattle — we grow a large portion of the feed ourselves.

This corn is harvested as silage and becomes part of our custom cattle rations. We’re also proud to provide feed to other South Texas cattle producers, supporting agriculture beyond our own operation.

Every harvest is another reminder that great cattle start with great nutrition. 🚜🤎🇺🇸

Hosted visitors from Silver Fern Farms all the way from New Zealand last week! 🇳🇿➡️🇺🇸

While their focus is primarily grass-fed beef, they spent time with us in Gonzales County learning about our grain-finished cattle program and seeing firsthand how we achieve the exceptional marbling that makes for a premium eating experience.

One of the best parts of agriculture is the opportunity to learn from producers around the world. Different approaches, different environments, but the same passion for producing quality beef. Grateful for the conversations, shared knowledge, and new friendships made along the way.

As we continue our feedyard jobs mini-series, next up is the processing crew. The processing crew plays a key role in cattle health and well-being from day one at the feedyard.

A processing crew’s main responsibility is to assist with the safe and efficient handling of cattle during processing.

Here’s what that looks like:
🐮 Sorting, weighing and moving cattle
🐮 Administering vaccines and other health products according to protocol
🐮 Applying identification tags and recording important information
🐮 Working alongside crew members to ensure cattle are properly processed and cared for

Their attention to detail and teamwork help ensure cattle are set up for success from day one, supporting both animal health and overall feedyard performance🐄

Little boots learning big lessons - cattle on feed and water, pens checked, cowboys looked after.

Grateful to raise our kids in this life and pass down a legacy built on hard work, responsibility, and love for the land. Sixth generation cattle rancher in the making. 🐂
