Dear Trainer,

When my horse comes home a little leaner than when he left, I’ll thank you for riding him for the time you said you would.

When he moves a bit faster on the ground, I’ll thank you for teaching him manners and about personal space and boundaries

When he has a few bumps and scrapes, I’ll thank you for teaching him how to move his feet and handle himself in sticky situations.

When he cleans up all his food a bit faster than normal, I’ll thank you for teaching him to not be a wasteful and picky eater.

When he guzzles water from his bucket, I’ll thank you for teaching him how to drink under stress.

When he has shavings in his mane and tail and sawdust on his coat, I’ll thank you for giving him a clean and safe place to rest and think after a long day.

And when he starts winning, I’ll thank you again for all the valuable time you put in, and wonder how you do it on the pay and criticism you get in return.

Dear Trainer, Thank you for touching our horses with your knowledge, skill, passion and oftentimes love. We’d be nowhere without you.

Sincerely,
A Grateful Owner.

Oh it’s too hot? That’s cute. 😉

The horses honestly handled it great. They got linament and nice hose down and their electrolytes.
Me, I think I sweated out and dried three times. 🥵

Thanks Dana little for the video.

Only two emotions, patience and humor. However we can discipline while still being patient and laugh about it later.
The point is, we need to be able to control our emotions and if you feel angry or frustrated, take a break and get some instruction. Frustration begins where knowledge ends. Don’t be too prideful to ask for help. No one learned perfectly and we all learned from someone at some point.

I saw a comment recently that said horses should have the right to say no—to loading, tying, being led, being rugged, having their feet done, etc.
And I think there’s an important conversation here.
At what point does giving a horse the right to say “no”become failing to give that horse an education?

Because we aren’t just our horses’ friends. We are their guardians.
What happens when there’s a wildfire and that horse HAS to get on a trailer?
What happens when he’s injured and needs to load to go to the vet?
What happens when the farrier needs to work on his feet because his health depends on it?
What happens if, God forbid, you die tomorrow and somebody else has to care for him?

A horse that has spent his entire life learning, “If I don’t want to, I don’t have to,” may eventually find himself in a situation where “no” isn’t an option. And now the horse pays the price for an education we chose not to give him.
That is where I think we have to ask ourselves some uncomfortable questions.

At what point does it become irresponsible? At what point are we actually doing the horse a disservice in the name of kindness?
Fairness does not mean a horse never has to do something he doesn’t want to do.
My horses are absolutely allowed to have opinions. They’re allowed to be unsure. They’re allowed to tell me something is difficult. They’re allowed to need more time, more explanation, or a different approach.

I will listen.
But listening to an opinion and giving a horse the final decision are two very different things.
If I ask my horse to load, he needs to load. If I ask him to stand tied, he needs to stand tied. If I need to handle his feet, lead him somewhere, doctor him, or move him out of danger, I need to be able to do that.

And in return, I owe him fairness.
I owe him good timing. I owe him patience. I owe him clear communication. I owe him the responsibility of never asking more than necessary and never using force simply because I can.
That’s leadership to me.
And I genuinely believe that’s part of why my horses trust me. They know I’m fair. They know I’ll listen. They know I’ll take care of them.

So when I say, “I need you to do this,” I want them to have enough trust in me to say:
She’s never steered me wrong before.”
Giving a horse an education isn’t taking away his voice.
Sometimes it’s one of the greatest protections we can give him.

Planned to get out riding by 8:30 to beat the heat but my trailer had other plans. A flat pushes us back an hour and boy was the heat brutal. Fortunately the trails were clear on the river side and we meandered down a shady trail all the way to sandbar. The horses were happy to have a drink and a roll! 😂 This is where I realized I was getting heat exhaustion. We made it back ok but spent time hosing horses and making sure they were ok before heading inside to cool off. Thanks Dana little for guiding us, it was a blast and we will be back.

Starting August 17, lessons will be available first to schedule on Wednesdays and Fridays. Select Saturday lessons will now be available but you must text me to schedule as I usually reserve weekends for shows.

If you are a new student, please message me first and I will send you a link if I feel we are a good fit. Also note, I may not be able to schedule you in for a couple weeks due to high volume and availability.

Welcome back!

Lessons are postponed until August 7th. Have a safe summer!

I have two sets available right now, will make more if I have any interest. I’ve been using my prototype in the video for 6 months now, and it’s working perfectly. Holds up a lot better than the other brand that’s nylon, and these are prettier!! ☺️
