Just like that... breeding season is in the books. ☑️

We wrapped up the recips today and kicked out the bulls to finish up.

Now it's time for them to go to work, soak up some sunshine and hope the rains keep coming.

Showmanship is always the most important 💪

Today, that Keiser family mentality really hit home. We were happy to not only be one of the Buff Branding showmanship sponsors, but had one of our own as the judge.

So proud of Helene’s first time as a judge and a successful weekend for the Buffs!

Mama’s on the move 🚚

Our destination looked a little different this year after the fires this spring, but it's always a good feeling getting cows to their summer home.

We finished the day sorting in the rain — a good reminder that things can recover. Hopefully by next year, we’ll be kicking cows out into belly deep green grass again 🌧️

Two years apart - full sisters. Edna and now “Elastagirl” are two cuts from the same cloth. 👯‍♀️

She has some big shoes to fill following her big sister, but we’re excited to see how she grows up 💋

The sun is shining and it’s going to be another big day in Kearney. ☀️

⭐️ 2 p.m. - Pen heifers sell
This group of three Sim/Angus heifers are out of easy doing angus cows and some of the top purebred Simmental bulls from Trauernicht Simmentals, J and C Simmentals and K-LER Cattle. These heifers are halter broke and will make docile, high performing replacement heifers.

These two percentage simmental heifers are ready for any level of showman. Out of the 40 cow family, they’re made to not only have fun in the show ring, but will really shine as mama cows in the future. Ask anyone in our family, this cow family runs generations deep. Both are out of LHT Perserverance 442k who continues to stamp his heifers with longevity and maternal merit.

It’s sale day at the Nebraska Classic⭐️

The sale will start at approximately 12:45 following a short panel discussion. Shorthorns are the sixth breed in sale order.

Lot 7 - Purebred Shorthorn heifer
This heifer has mama cow written all over her. The 95 cow family now has three generations running in our pastures due to the consistency and quality they generate. She’s out of our new herd sire, a Byland Top Dog son who we’ve been very impressed by.

Lot 4,5,6 - Purebred Shorthorn Pen of Bulls
This group of bulls is out of our Waukaru Farms herd sire, Waukaru Epic 1062. We’ve kept very few of his daughters, because they’re always some of the best we raise. The cows are proven and have continued to stamp their calves with longevity and traits that can fit any operation. Study the pedigrees, these guys are backed by some powerful families.

Full Nebraska Classic prep mode 💪

The barn is busy, the to-do list is long, and the final touches are underway. But this week reminded us how important it is to slow down and savor the moments that matter most.

We unexpectedly lost our Grandpa Smidt last weekend. Even with everyone headed different directions — Heath in Lincoln; Mom, Dad & Helene at a horse show in Lubbock and Emily in Des Moines coaching the IEA team — we were thankful to come together, celebrate family and remember him.

Grandpa was one of our biggest supporters. Always in the stands no matter how long the day, and always ready with a joke no matter how it went.

Today we’re back to the grind, carrying that perspective with us and not taking the little moments for granted. And as always… we’ll never complain about the extra help in the barn 🤍

These two sisters are in the running for barn sweetheart and sell next week at the Nebraska Classic.

Both are out of the 40 cow family, which continues to stamp heifers with longevity, femininity and breeding versatility. On the top side, they're out of a bull from the Trauernicht Simmentals program, a son of the popular Perserverance bull.
