We have our first butcher date scheduled for October!🎉🎉

We chose to partner with Integrity Meats in Churubusco this year. We like their process, especially the vacuum packaging they use.

We had a lot of lambs the past few days, only three ewe left to lamb.

This afternoon we had to pull a large ram lamb that the ewe just could not push out. It just took a little pull and he came right out.

We walked out to do chores and were surprised with a nice set of twin ewes from one of our Dorset breeding ewes. We weren't supposed to have anymore lambs until March 15, looks like we had someone escape and have a good time.

We planned for Lambing season to start in March this year. We are trying a later lambing to see if we can increase the number of lambs born and reduce the effects of deep cold.

Unfortunately one of our rams had a different idea last August when he bolted through the electric fence to spend time with one of the ewes.

Now we have an Early January lamb to keep us busy.

Today we separated ewes into breeding groups and put rams in for making next year's lambs. We have three rams that we use in a rotation and make breeding decisions based on pedigree and replacement plans. We have 29 ewes in with the three rams this year, if all goes as planned we will have about 60 lambs next spring.

This year we made a change, instead of breeding for winter lambs with the possibility of having show lambs we chose to delay breeding until now. This means we will have lambs starting the second week of March until late April. This should get us past the worst of winter and make lambing easier on both us and the ewes.

We also made tough decisions on culling ewes. We decided to remove a set of nine ewes from the flock. Four of the decisions were easy, three have bad udders and one was barren last year. The others were more difficult ranging from old age to poor reproduction to poor conformation. These are the tough decisions livestock farmers have to make every year, difficult but necessary.

Jolly and I worked the ewes by ourselves and it went great. We moved the ewes into the lambing barn and confined them in a small pen. Jolly marked the ewes while I reviewed the records and prepared tags. After we finished that we removed each group of ewes and moved them to their pastures or pens. It worked better then either of use expected.
