Goats will happily eat grass, weeds, leaves, and brush depending on what’s available. One thing we’ve noticed over time though, grass-heavy pastures tend to hold up longer under pressure because grasses grow from dense crowns and root systems and can recover faster after being grazed.

Brush and browse can produce a lot of feed too, but once leaves are stripped, recovery is usually slower and more seasonal.

That mix of grazing and browsing is one reason goats fit so well into so many different pasture systems.

One little system we use around here with our ear tags

Girls get forward-facing tags. Boys get backward-facing tags. Makes it a whole lot easier to tell the s*x from a distance when checking the herd out in pasture.

This little guy is rocking the backwards tag for easy identification come weaning time so everyone can be sorted with ease

One of last year’s bottle babies all grown up.

Bottle kids are always a little different. They tend to stay people-oriented, curious, and usually think they belong wherever you are.

Goat kids will usually start nibbling grass, leaves, and hay within their first couple weeks of life, even though milk is still their main nutrition source.

That early browsing is actually helping develop their rumen, which is the largest compartment of a goat’s 4-part stomach. As they eat more forage, the rumen begins growing the microbes they’ll need to properly digest grass, weeds, and brush later on.

Milk builds the kid… but forage builds the rumen.

Mother goats are usually extremely bonded to their own kids… but can be pretty rude to everybody else’s.

Right after birth, does learn their kids mainly through scent, sound, and nursing behavior. That strong bond is why you’ll often see nanny goats gently talking to their own babies one second, then head butting another kid that tries to sneak a drink.

It may look harsh sometimes, but it’s actually important herd behavior. Good mothers protect their milk and attention for their own offspring to make sure their kids stay strong and healthy.

Goats are true herd animals.

You’ll notice they rarely spread out alone for long. Most of the herd moves, rests, browses, and travels together. Even the kids learn quickly to stay with the group for safety and social structure.

A calm herd usually means animals feel secure, comfortable with their environment, and trust the routine around them.

Ever notice goats curl their lip up and make a funny face sometimes?

That’s called the Flehmen response. Goats do this to pull scent particles toward an organ on the roof of their mouth called the Jacobson’s organ. It helps them process smells and hormones, especially during breeding season.

Bucks are the most famous for doing it, but does and kids will sometimes make the same face too. Looks goofy… but it’s actually a pretty advanced scent detection system.

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!🌸

Nothing follows mom around closer than a little mini me. From the pasture to the house, moms are usually the ones teaching, protecting, and keeping everybody in line.

Hope everyone has a blessed Mother’s Day today!

One thing that doesn’t get talked about enough with meat goats is just how much milk production matters for fast growing kids.

This nanny here is from last year and is being an excellent mother raising a kid. Good mothers usually tell on themselves through kid growth, body condition, and how active their kids stay nursing.

A good Spanish nanny may not look like a dairy goat, but strong maternal instincts and solid milk production are a huge part of raising heavy healthy kids. Spring pasture helps too. Fresh green forage this time of year can really boost milk production naturally.
