Two high schoolers, 15-year-old Erica Choi and 16-year-old Dominick Redmond, are asking Colorado restaurants to “skip the stuff” by cutting down on single-use items like plastic cutlery, napkins, straws, and condiments. They drafted a new bill with the help of Democratic state lawmakers Sen. Lisa Cutter and Rep. Meg Froelich to reduce waste by requiring restaurants to provide single-use items only upon request. And now, the Colorado legislature is considering the bill. Just a few months ago, Choi and Redmond had little political experience beyond AP U.S. History. Now their plunge into civic engagement has put them in front of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee. Choi said: “Anyone can do it, as long as you have the motivation and an idea.”

The UK government has announced a ban on all new exploration licences for oil and gas in the North Sea, a move welcomed by environmental groups but criticized by opposition parties. The energy crisis sparked by the Iran war has increased calls from some quarters for the UK to drill more oil and gas in the North Sea, despite evidence suggesting it would make no difference to household energy bills.
“If the recent turmoil has taught us anything it’s that relying on fossil fuels, whether from the North Sea or Gulf states, will only leave us at the mercy of foreign wars and dictators,” said Greenpeace UK’s co-executive director Areeba Hamid. “The government deserves credit for holding firm while many politicians and commentators are trying to turn climate action into a scapegoat.” Leading climate scientists have repeatedly warned against new oil drilling in the North Sea.

Exotic Flora & Fauna 06/16/2026

Welcome to the 24th post in a weekly series entitled "Exotic Flora & Fauna!" This is a dive into various exotic plants and animals you might not normally hear about, and each Tuesday we'll feature a different and potentially mind-boggling entry. If you’re interested in the incredible, the spooky, and the downright kooky, check out these posts!

Imagine if you will, taking a thin cross-sectional slice of a person’s leg. Pretty gory, right? With all that muscle, and nerves, and a bone somewhere around the middle? Now what if that was a flower. You probably just threw up. Nick sure was close when Producer Donna walloped him with this disgusting display of floral f**kery. Behold, the Giant Pelican Flower (Aristolochia gigantea), also strangely known as the Brazilian Dutchman’s Pipe. This thing is just going to get stranger and stranger from here on out.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aristolochia_gigantea

Morphology:
Aristolochia gigantea is an ornamental plant, with woody vines that help it climb other foliage to get access to the sun. The leaves are relatively simple, your average heart shape without much going on. And then there are the flowers. Yup. That’s where the main show begins and ends. Colored in reds and maroons with pink to white veins running every which way, you’ll think you’ve entered a maniac’s arboretum if you happen upon these freak flowers. They aren’t small flowers either, sometimes as large as a human head! Can you imagine turning a corner in a forest and that thing is staring at you? Nick encourages you to wear your brown pants if you find yourself in the native range of this ill-appearing inflorescence.

Distribution & Habitat:
If you guessed this thing was tropical, congrats, you get a gold star. Or maybe a really fleshy looking one. These subtropical plants are native to Brazil, Costa Rica and Panama. It doesn’t the tolerate the cold at all, and temperatures below 50 °F (10 °C) are a death sentence. So if you reside in the Midwest, your only chance of being spooked by this thing drops significantly. For everyone else, well, good luck.

How Exotic?:
On a scale of 1 to 10, Nick’s News gives the Giant Pelican Flower a 3 out of 10. It isn’t a pelican, and it sure as hell isn’t a dutchman’s pipe. It’s just a freaky flower that likes to hang out on a couple of small islands and confuse the hell out of butterflies. Did we forget to mention that the flowers confuse butterflies to intentionally kill their larvae with their toxic leaves? No? Ok, maybe this thing gets a 4, because that’s pretty damn evil.

We hope you found this article informative and fun! Stay tuned for future installments, available on Tuesdays, as we continue to explore various exotic flora and fauna! If you have any questions or would like to submit an exotic flora and fauna suggestion, contact us here on Facebook or email us at [email protected]. As always, we love you all and have a great day!

According to The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, puffins are having a record-breaking breeding year. Every year, the conservation nonprofit does boots-on-the-ground research to count every single puffin on Skomer Island in Wales, setting out with binoculars and a notepad in hand to record all puffins in sight. This year, 52,019 puffins were counted on Skomer Island in Wales, beating the island’s 2025 record of 43,626. The report came as a relief to The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, after high numbers of seabirds and marine life across southern Europe washed ashore last season. A spokesperson for the nonprofit said, “It’s a very pleasant surprise to see the puffin population thriving.”

Experts are celebrating a record-breaking start to sea turtle nesting season. In Florida, sea turtle nesting season typically runs from March 1 through October 31. Just two months into the season, the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute announced that both loggerhead and leatherback nests were outpacing recent record-breaking years. The FWC reported 1,008 leatherback nests, up by 4% compared to May 2025. There were also three Kemp’s ridley nests, up by two from this time last year, marking a huge improvement for the world’s smallest and most endangered sea turtle. Even more remarkably, the number of loggerhead nests so far this year is already at 1,450, roughly 82% higher than it was this time last year. In 2024, scientists expected Florida to break nesting records, but Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton caused severe flooding and washed away many sea turtle nests across the state. Despite extensive damage, wildlife experts continued conservation and restoration efforts throughout the following year, and it appears to be paying off.
