🌾 Mulch Matters

Right now on the farm, we’re covering our soil with straw—and it might look simple, but it’s powerful.

Straw acts like a blanket:
🌱 Protects the soil
💧 Holds moisture
🪱 Feeds soil life as it breaks down
🌿 Helps suppress weeds

This is a big part of our no-till approach—instead of disturbing the soil, we cover it, feed it, and let it stay alive and balanced.

It’s slower. It’s gentler.
And over time, it builds healthier soil and stronger plants.

So if you see straw-covered beds out here…
that’s not mess—it’s intention 💛
Shout out to everyone who made this possible, I love connecting with new people💚.

🌱 What’s under the tarps at Finding Ground Farm?

It may look a little strange, but covering the ground with tarps is actually a natural way farmers prepare new garden beds.

By blocking sunlight, the tarp stops weeds from growing. At the same time, the soil underneath stays moist and protected, which encourages earthworms and beneficial microbes to get to work.

The grass and weeds slowly break down and turn into organic matter, feeding the soil instead of fighting it.

When we remove the tarp, we’re often left with softer, healthier soil that’s ready to plant.

Sometimes the best way to improve the soil is simply to let nature do the work. 🌱

February is one of my favorite times of year as we anticipate and plan. it’s full of hope and gives you space to dream. I love living in Michigan, where we’re blessed with all of the seasons. A time to rest. A time to plan. Space to feel hope in our hearts again.

It reminds me of the seasons of my life that felt so hopeless, and so desolate like sun would never shine in my heart again. If you’re in that season right now, know you’re not alone. Praying that even now you feel the warm of joy and love, and that even when it feels impossible, spring is coming.

Today is International Day of Rural Women, and my heart is full thinking about all the incredible women working in food and agriculture around the world. 👩‍🌾

From farms and ranches here in America to fields across the globe, women are part of the backbone of feeding and nurturing communities. We plant, we raise, we harvest, we sell, we nurture — often quietly, and often while juggling so much more behind the scenes.

As a woman in this industry, I know firsthand how exhausting and rewarding this life can be. The overwhelming list of to-dos, the constant problem-solving, the deep pride in what we grow and build - it’s real. And so is the struggle to balance it all: the farm, the children, the family, the buissnes. Some days, it feels like there isn’t enough of me to go around, and honestly some days I feel like such a failure.

But even in the hard moments, I see so many women showing up with grit, grace, and heart. I’m proud to stand beside you — and to be one of you. 🌱❤️
