Hot Pepper Herb Farm Great Falls, SC

Hot Pepper Herb Farm Great Falls, SC We grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs, fruit and berries practicing only organic and sustainable principles. Each year we try to grow new veggies.

Our farm is located off Highway 21 south of Rock Hill, SC.( Great Falls SC) We have been selling at the Matthews Community Farmers Market since 2005. The hours there change with the season so watch for information on that. Winter hours are Saturday from 8 am till 10 am. Although we are not certified organic, we practice sustainable, agronomy and organic principles. Our farm is definitely "Earth

Friendly" We probably grow a vegetable for every letter of the alphabet. Cathy used to be an art major and it shows in her cultivation of beautiful colorful delicious crops. In addition, we grow starter plants and herbs. We are constantly expanding our orchard of fruit trees and berry bushes, offering a wide variety of unique produce. We run a "Flexible CSA" called" Field to Fridge." Unlike your typical box of goodies from a farm, we give you the option to come to the market and pick out what you want, when you want it. Membership starts at $100. We sell to numerous restaurants in the Charlotte area, donate and collect for Friendship Trays Charlotte and work with Churches and Organizations donating plants for their gardens. Ask Cathy to grow something for you and she will give it a try. Eric makes some beautiful cedar and apple cooking planks all grown from local wood. As our name indicates we are quite fond of peppers and grow everything from sweet marconis, to peppers that will blow your head off. When they are not in season we have an extensive selection of dry peppers for you to choose from; as well as other dried goods. Plus we have an addictive spicy peanut brittle, that you will absolutely love. So come visit us at the market. Appointments can be made to come visit the farm.

Happy New Year Everyone!!

Well, it has been more than a minute since the last newsletter. It has taken me a while to get adjusted and settled into the new house in Rock Hill. Although I am not “in town”, I am very close to shopping and restaurants and have easy access to I-77 and I-485. So, getting into Charlotte and Matthews is extremely easy compared to coming from Great Falls. The neighborhood is quiet, but the general noise level and light pollution are higher than on the farm, and it is taking a bit to get used to it. But, all-in-all, it was the right decision, and I am glad it is over.

My new endeavor, McCall's Orchard and Gardening Services is starting to take shape. The woodworking shop is coming along, and I have several projects on the books. I also have been working with two non-profits, Sleeps in Heavenly Pease and She Built this City.

The blueberries, figs, elderberries, and persimmons are planted, and I have grapes and peach trees on order. Those should be delivered this month. More of the same type as on the farm but scaled down for personal use.

That being said, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, I will be teaching a class in conjunction with Renfrow’s Hardware in Matthews, NC on “Fruit Trees- Best Practices”. The class is tentatively scheduled to run from 2:00-4:00.

The class will meet at Renfrow's Hardware for an overview and then proceed to their farm for the “hands-on” portion of the class.

-We will review:

-The Structure of a Tree

-Pruning

-Equipment

-Fertilizing

-Spraying

-House Keeping

-Thinning and Harvesting

-Planting

-Culture

-Mistakes

By the end of the class, you will be able to select the proper trees for your site, the best location on your site, plant and maintain your fruit trees for a bountiful harvest. You will be able to bring your orchard to fruition.

Next week’s newsletter will include sign-up information, which will be done through Renfrow’s but in the meantime, reserve the date.

I look forward to a full class. Attendance is limited, so stay tuned for further details. I hope to see you then.

Until then

I have said goodbye, almost, to the farm, and have relocated to the outskirts of Rock Hill in the Leslie area this week. My new view out the back door is not as large as the farm, but it is enough for me and two dogs, and it should be WAY less maintenance.
I wanted to say thank you to all the people that helped make this transition happen.
First off, Mike Morrell and his team for finding me a buyer, his wife Libby Love Morrell for arranging the financing for the new house, and Micah Winn and his team for finding me this new place. These people had to put up with a lot of my eccentricities, to put it mildly.
Also, Megan Adimaro, her mom and Perry Saito for helping with the move in the pouring rain on Tuesday. Natalie Veres spent most of Sunday hauling what we could.
Libby and Mike took Sam and Smokey, the tom cats, to their farm so that was a huge relief. Mike is going to meet me down at the farm in the morning to get the last of the heavier shop tools and that should be the last of the last.
My goal was to find a place that was close into town without being in town and to have neighbors without having people too close. This house is in the county but five minutes to I-77 and shopping. On our second night here, a neighbor three doors down stopped in and gave me a basket of peaches as a "Welcome Wagon" type gift. People walk the streets and seem to look out for each other. So, I may have lucked out.
I still have the POD to unload, need to contract a fencing company to finish off the back yard fencing and another contractor to look into some water issues in the crawl space. But every day, I check off a couple more items on the punch list.
So, here's to a new beginning and hopefully a much easier life.
Once the dust settles, I still plan on ramping up the new McCall's Orchard and Gardening Services company. So, if I can return any favors, please let me know.
Until next time.

“Starting over can be the scariest thing in the entire world, whether it’s leaving a lover, a school, a team, a friend or anything else that feels like a core part of our identity but when your gut is telling you that something here isn’t right or feels unsafe, I really want you to listen and trust in that voice.”

Well I finalized the sell of the farm yesterday but have a week to get things moved. I was talking to my therapist today about the differences in selling the farm and selling other houses. Cathy and I always left places way nicer than when we bought them.
In Indian Land, we rebuilt the house and it was amazing when we left.
At the farm, we did nothing to the house but spent all of our energy on the property. One was all structural and the other was all organic. The organic one is being harder to let go. The house is a house but the farm is emotional.
The first picture was from 2007 when we bought the property and the second was from 2016. Same shot.
We built this place from the ground up. literally. Hopefully, the new owners will continue with what we started.
Best of luck to them going forward.

I really hate to have to do this, but I cannot take all the cats to the new house. All three are fixed males and are used to having plenty of attention. H***e is the fuzzy one, Smokey is the big grey and Sam is the white one. If anyone can help me to rehome at lease one or two of these, please let me know. I need to place them within the next week or so. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

IT'S DONE. I finally have the farm under contract and the contract for the new house in Rock Hill was signed yesterday. I listed the farm back in February on the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association site and on MLS in May but it feels like this has been going on forever. Really, really mentally exhausted.
Selling the farm was very emotional. It was not like any other place that I had sold before. All of the work that Cathy and I put into this place. The high tunnels, orchard, all the fencing, the prep kitchen, etc. Some of the fruit trees have not even reached maturity yet.
But it it is time that I found someplace of my own and start to move forward.
The new place is about five minutes off the I-77/Dave Lyle exit in south Rock Hill which puts me around a half hour closer to Charlotte. So that being said, no more excuses for not down to SC to visit.
The closing is on the 5th of August and the move is scheduled for the 12th.
I would still like to rehome a couple of the mature cats. So if anyone is interested, please let me know.
Thank you for your love and support.
Here's to a new beginning.

Got a surprise this morning when I went to feed the front porch cats. I am trying to rehome some of the existing cats prior to selling the farm and I DO NOT need more being added. I don't know who the mother is. All my cats are fixed. I hate unresponsible pet owners that cannot take care of the animals properly. If anyone is interested, please let me know. I assume since they are eating dry food they are not dependent upon mom anymore.
