First clutch of the year. One of the breeding challenges in Wisconsin is getting chicks on the ground early due to the cold weather. You get many cracked, unfertile, and frozen eggs. I collect and incubate the eggs and will set them under the hen the last days of the 21 day cycle. Getting the hen ready to sit is another challenge you have to prepare for too. I like to put wooden eggs in their nest as they lay and eventually when she has accumulated enough eggs she will go sit on them. The timing of the incubator is more important than when the hen sits. It's okay to run the incubator a week or two prior to her sitting, as long as she starts sitting within the 21 day cycle. It's best to move the eggs from the incubator under the hen when it's dark. The hens adopt the eggs better and lower your risk of her breaking it.
