GBDD šŸ¹ Food duo exploring every plate, every sip, everywhere we go

We came back to Vintage Cantina after years away… and now I remember why we might wait a few more. šŸ˜‚šŸŒ®

For drinks we had the peach, grapefruit and fruit punch margaritas. All three were DELICIOUS! Honestly, they’re like drinking juice. The downside? At $8.25 a pop for the size they come in, they feel a little overpriced. Delicious? Absolutely. A great value? Not so much.

For apps we ordered chips and salsa, guacamole, and queso with chorizo.

Those CHIPS, though! Thicc, hearty, perfectly fried, served warm and sprinkled with some sort of seasoning salt. REALLY, REALLY GOOD. The salsa, guacamole and queso with chorizo are all winners!

We tried several tacos, along with an order of nachos requested with the jalapenos on the side.

My favorite taco is the Carnitas! Crispy pork, cojita cheese and pickled seasonal fruit, which happened to be apple this time. Somehow, it ALL just works.

We also tried the Chicago Asada, Barbacola and Tequila Mockingbird. These tacos are unique and flavorful, each bringing something different to the table.

A friend ordered three tacos on flour tortillas, which cost an extra $1 per taco. Want to make those a ā€œtaco-dillaā€? That’s another $1 PER TACO.

You’d think you’d get a taco made into a quesadilla, right? Nope. They simply add cheese between the two tortillas. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Depending on which taco you choose, you could be paying almost $9 for ONE taco after those upcharges. That’s a hard pass for us.

The nachos arrived with jalapeƱos on them, even though we wanted them on the side. Unfortunately, those were supposed to be dinner for the kiddo, and they were too spicy for her to eat.

Our server was nice, but everything was SO SLOW. And when she collected our plates, she took the nearly untouched nachos without asking if everything was okay or whether we wanted a box.

A quick check-in could have made a difference.

Vintage Cantina has some genuinely delicious food. The chips were fantastic, the dips were great, and unique tacos.

But between the pricey margaritas, the taco-dilla upcharges, the nachos mishap and the slow service, the overall experience was a mixed bag.

Such a great restaurant!

A few weeks ago, we were contacted by Black Iron Bar & Grill and invited to come check them out since they’re a newer restaurant. We told them we’d try to make it in a couple weeks, and when we do these reviews, we never tell a restaurant when we’re coming. We want the experience to be as authentic as possible.

Black Iron is located inside the Delta Hotel, and I have to say…the space is BEAUTIFUL. For a hotel restaurant and bar, we were also pleasantly surprised by the prices. They’re very comparable to other restaurants in the area, which was honestly refreshing to see.

We started with a Wisco Old-Fashioned, which I requested with J. Henry. My first one came with a muddled sugar cube and bitters 🤣 no orange and cherry. When we mentioned it to the bartender, Mariah, she immediately apologized and fixed it. It was only her second day, so honestly, mistakes happen.

For food, we ordered the Garlic Parmesan Boneless Wings, Black Iron Smash Burger and BBQ Grilled Chicken Sandwich.

The wings were overcooked and the sauce had almost congealed onto them. I actually like boneless wings overcooked a bit, but the wifey didn’t care for them.

We also tried their Garlic Ghost Ranch Sauce 🄵🄵 and the Scorpion Reaper Wing Sauce 🄵🄵🄵. Let’s just say…they definitely aren’t playing around with the heat! šŸ”„

The Black Iron Smash Burger comes with two patties, aged white cheddar, smoked bacon, crispy onions and their signature sauce. Sounds great, but that’s not what I got. šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø I was given the All American Smash instead.

The burger itself? Actually really good. The patties were seasoned REALLY well and it was a solid burger. I just really wish I would’ve received the burger I ordered. šŸ˜‚

The BBQ Grilled Chicken Sandwich had a juicy chicken breast topped with bourbon BBQ, smoked Gouda and crispy onion strings. Really good sandwich and MESSY!

Overall, Black Iron has a beautiful space, reasonable pricing and some good food. Mariah and the rest of the staff we interacted with were incredibly nice, and we know newer restaurants can have some growing pains while everyone finds their footing, but we also think Black Iron has some good potential.

Bigger isn’t always better… especially when it comes to sushi.

We went out for sushi and started with the Toki Old Fashioned, which we ordered sweet. The menu says it has a touch of sweetness, but this was definitely more than a touch. šŸ˜‚ It was good, but if I ordered it again, I’d definitely get it as a press instead.

We also ordered the pan-fried pork gyoza, which had a really good filling-to-dumpling ratio. No complaints there!

For rolls, we went with the Spicy Tuna, Shrimp Tempura and Godzilla.

First, these rolls were visually beautiful. They definitely know how to make a sushi roll look good.

Flavor-wise, they were good, but we’ve definitely had better. Our biggest issue was just… HOW MUCH. šŸ˜‚

There was SO much sauce on the rolls, and they were HUGE. And when I say huge, I mean these were not exactly a one-bite situation.

The Spicy Tuna roll could have easily been cut into two pieces, and the Godzilla was so big around that it was almost comical.

Sushi should be something you can pick up and pop into your mouth in one bite. These were NOT one-bite sushi rolls. Unless you want to look like a chipmunk with its cheeks stuffed full.

Our server, Vicky, was very polite and attentive, which we definitely appreciated.

The building itself is very open and nicely decorated, giving it a really nice atmosphere.

And apparently, the ā€œbigger is betterā€ philosophy applies to more than just the sushi…

The menu is TWELVE pages long. šŸ˜‚

Twelve.

Pages.

At some point, you’re not choosing what you want, you’re choosing which 11 pages you’re willing to ignore. 🤣

Overall, we enjoyed our visit and the sushi was good, but between the oversized rolls, heavy sauces and massive menu, this was definitely a case of more isn’t necessarily better.

We found the fried rice of our dreams… unfortunately, we had to wait a lifetime to get it. šŸ˜‚

Some friends introduced us to the ginger fried rice from GingeRootz, and it was SO good that we obviously had to go to the restaurant and try it for ourselves.

Unfortunately, our first visit made us wonder if GingeRootz might be better suited for takeout.

The restaurant was pretty quiet when we arrived, only two other tables, and both already had their food.

We ordered sodas, and before we even received them, our server came back asking about appetizers. We ordered the fried dumplings, which came out… but still no sodas. We eventually had to ask about those, too.

For our mains, we ordered a large ginger fried rice, chicken lettuce wraps and General Tso’s chicken.

Ginger Fried Rice, THIS is why we came. 🤤 Packed with flavor, that delicious ginger-forward taste and all the savory goodness you want from fried rice.

The Chicken Lettuce Wraps is another BIG winner. Flavorful chicken mixture that you scoop into butter lettuce leaves. The combination of savory filling and crisp lettuce is just SO good.

The General Tso’s Chicken was definitely different from what I expected. The chicken itself was cooked well, but the sauce was VERY sweet with no heat. Not bad, just a completely different flavor profile than the General Tso’s I’m used to.

During the meal, we had to wave down our server for refills… then again for to-go boxes… and eventually, even for our bill.

We figured maybe it was just an off night. So we waited a few weeks and went back.

This time one table in the entire restaurant…and somehow… the exact same service.

Listen, we absolutely LOVE that ginger fried rice. The lettuce wraps are fantastic too. But when you’re repeatedly waiting for drinks, refills, boxes and your bill in an almost-empty restaurant, it makes it really hard to enjoy the experience.

So our verdict?

Order the ginger fried rice and the chicken lettuce wraps. Seriously. Just maybe order it to go… unless you have nowhere else to be and like waiting. šŸ˜‚

Green Bay… who gave you permission to have BIG CITY BRUNCH VIBES?!

We went to Voyageurs Bakehouse for brunch and just… WOW.

First off, this place is C U T E. But we’ll talk more about that later.

We started with drinks: the Signature Cinnamon Roll Latte and one of their seasonal drinks, the Valencia Sunrise.

The Cinnamon Roll Latte came with a little cinnamon roll crustini on the side. CUTE. And delicious.

The Valencia Sunrise is espresso, fresh-squeezed orange juice, cinnamon and cardamom syrup. Such an interesting combination, but somehow it WORKS. Hands down, I would order this again.

Then we started with the Big Cinnamon Roll.

So big. So cinnamon-y. So perfect. The icing and gooey molasses come on the side, so you can add as much, or as little, as your heart desires.

For our ā€œmains,ā€ we basically did a little smattering.

Bakehouse BLT — Served on seeded sourdough with Jones applewood bacon, heirloom tomatoes, arugula and remoulade. A REALLY good sandwich, and it comes with a side of crispy homemade chips.

Crispy Patatas Bravas — These are tallow-fried to absolute perfection and served with romesco sauce and finished with a herb drizzle. The smokiness with just a little bit of spice was addicting.

Toast & Seasonal Jam and a Sourdough Croissant rounded out our little brunch spread.

And the service? Fantastic. Katie and Celeste were so friendly, helpful and informative. We also learned that all of their drink syrups are made in-house, which just makes everything feel that much more special.

Now… back to the atmosphere.

This place is IT.

It has those big-city vibes and flavors that make you feel like you should be sitting somewhere in Chicago, Minneapolis or New York—not Green Bay.

Green Bay is SO fortunate to have a place like this.

We will absolutely be back, and we’ll be bringing any out-of-town visitors here too.

Voyageurs Bakehouse is officially on the GBDD ā€œyou need to try thisā€ list. ā¤ļø

Near La-La-Lambeau is LaLa’s Cafe, and we’ve been wanting to try it for a while. This morning just seemed like the perfect time!

From the outside, it looks like it would be a small little cafe, but once you walk inside, it’s surprisingly bright and spacious.

As we were seated, the table behind us was getting ready to leave and talking to each other about how great the food was and how full they were. THIS really set the tone for some high expectations.

We ordered the American Breakfast, Eggs Benedict and a Strawberry Pancake.

The American Breakfast is two eggs, your choice of meat, potatoes and toast. We went with over-easy eggs, bacon, hash browns and sourdough. The eggs and hash browns were cooked perfectly. The bacon tasted like it had sat for a bit, but that certainly didn’t stop me from eating it. šŸ˜‚

The Strawberry Pancake, this thing filled a medium-sized plate and had a nice amount of strawberries on top. The pancake itself was fluffy and soft, making for a solid breakfast pancake.

The Eggs Benedict comes with thin slices of ham (not Canadian bacon), poached eggs on an English muffin and hollandaise sauce.

I LOVE Eggs Benedict. I LOVE hollandaise sauce. And I always feel like restaurants never give you enough hollandaise…

That is NOT the case here, and I AM HERE FOR IT. 🤣

There was plenty of that silky, buttery, slightly tangy hollandaise covering the eggs, and I was not mad about it one bit. My only real complaint, if you can even call it that, was the English muffin. It wasn’t toasted, or if they tried, it definitely wasn’t toasted enough for me.

And let me tell you about the service…

IT. WAS. FAST.

From the time we ordered to the time our food hit the table was less than 10 minutes. And it wasn’t just fast, the staff was polite and friendly too.

After finally trying LaLa’s, I completely understand why that table behind us was talking it up.

We’ll absolutely be back, and LaLa’s Cafe is officially being added to our breakfast go-to spots! šŸ³šŸ„žā¤ļø

THE ROCK SMELT WHAT SPREAD EAGLE WAS COOKING.

We spent the weekend with some good friends who unexpectedly treated us to dinner at The Chuckwagon for Friday fish—and apparently, we weren’t the only ones who heard there was food involved. šŸ˜‚

We arrived around 6:40 p.m. and this place was BUSY. We had about a 30-minute wait, but thankfully we could order drinks and an appetizer while we waited.

The fried pickles are spears with a thick, almost mozzarella-stick-like batter. Crispy on the outside with a substantial pickle inside. Definitely not tiny pickle chips!

For dinner, we ordered the house-breaded shrimp, baked cod, battered cod filets, and bacon & blue burger.

The house-breaded shrimp had great breading and was cooked perfectly. Simple, but done right.

The baked cod was cooked well, but VERY lightly seasoned and could’ve used more flavor.

The battered cod had a different issue. The fish was cooked well, but that batter was THICK. Like… REALLY thick. šŸ˜‚ Unfortunately, the batter closest to the fish was still slightly raw, so this one was a miss for us.

But let me tell you about the coleslaw! If you’re a fan of KFC’s coleslaw, this is VERY comparable. Creamy, sweet and delicious.

The Bacon & Blue Burger is our friend’s go-to, and I can see why. The house-made blue cheese spread is FRICKIN’ DELICIOUS. You may actually want to ask if you can buy some to take home. Seriously.

Service was… okay. Bailey was fantastic and attentive when we arrived, but once our food came out, it felt like we disappeared. We waited FOREVER for our bill. Eventually, our group of seven dwindled down to TWO people still waiting. 🤣 We flagged down another server, Olivia, who ended up bringing us the bill.

Our friends were disappointed with the fish and service, but assured us this was not the norm. The Chuckwagon has a solid reputation and loyal following, so we’re chalking this one up to an off night.

And then there was the moment we realized…

The Rock really DID smell what Spread Eagle was cooking. 🄊🤣
