Siestas have been proven to increase productivity and morale. Boss not so sure. Technically they are all working....grazers are making fertilizer and processing weeds. Dogs keeping predators away. At 88 F Outside probably warmest day this year. But here under the trees. Probably 70-74.

What does everyone do when the sun is up and its hot? And not even real hot yet. You have siesta time aka cud chewing time. A sheep's and dog's life on the farm.

Ok as the Sr farm boss I don’t normally post here but I want to give credit to the DH aka heavy lifter/driver. Let me explain. We have been slowly remodeling the kitchen. I have struggled with what I wanted for a new island. I wanted something that is pretty but sturdy enough to stand up to a farm family. Well he saw this post on Facebook where they used a tool box for the island. I was a little hesitant but we went one rainy Saturday to look at different stores and the different options. We settled on the Harbor Freight US General. And we changed out one of our smaller cabinets to a tool box as well. Needless to say I am so happy. I have so much more storage but they will stand up to not only the two legged people in the house but all the four legged visitors we tend to have.

Was working on a new fence yesterday. I had lots of "helpers". Additionally....I apparently did NOT use a string to make sure all the posts were in a straight line like I told the boss I did. Click on the 2nd picture to see what I mean.

We use our woodboiler year round for hot water, and heat for the house in the colder months.

We have to regularly clean out the ash box. Rather than dump it in a ravine or on the driveway to melt snow we have a multi step process that yields many products.

1st we dump the ash into a repurposed cow protein tub that we leave out and it fills with rain water.

The unburned charcoal float on the top. I skim off with metal strainer. The ash sinks. You get a brown liquid which is potassium hydroxide which can be used for soap, or soil amendment, various other applications. After the potassium hydroxide is pulled off you can let the ash dry and apply to soil or driveway or dust for garden, chicken dust bath.

The charcoal can be burned again or soaked in compost tea to inoculate for soil amendment, buried in soil for water retention, fed to livestock for digestive issues, human use for gi issues, aquarium filtration, water filtration for drinking, odor control.

And the wood we burn, waste from tree trimmers or dead falls from emerald ash, or other issues, storm damage.

All waste products into resources.

What waste products do you turn into resources?
