Sullivan Pheasant & Game Farm

Sullivan Pheasant & Game Farm Why Sullivan Strain Pheasants?
* ideal genetic phenotype
* exceptional "flightyness"
* best on farm

Sullivan Pheasant Farm was started in 1999 by Cavan Sullivan as an FFA project. We quickly found that there was a great demand for gamebirds, and the business grew. New facilities were built to include a modern hatchery, brooders, and grow out facilities. In 2008 Sullivan Pheasant Farm hit a mile stone when they broke the 30,000 mark for chicks hatched in a season. This year (2014) we will be prod

ucing around 180,000 day-old chicks! We may not be the largest Gamebird farm in the country, but our commitment to producing the "type" of bird needed by todays preserve owners has always been second to none. Each year we continue to make improvements on our strain of pheasant, and our customer loyalty is a true testament to its quality. We support both our State and National Gamebird Associations as well as local FFA, 4-H, and Boy Scout Groups. Thank you for the opportunity to let our birds work for you this season.

Some good friends at Sugar Creek Farms enjoying our pheasants last fall! This morning with the chill in the air kinda got me thinking of hunting? Did this happen to anyone else?

A beautiful morning in another release of juvenile PHEASANT. This stocking process when landowners commit to a three-year stocking program shows proven results. Let us help you develop a game bird paradise.

This is a shot of our new A room for starting day old chicks until day 7. The first 2 batches we have had less than 1% loss. Keeping them in small groups is an excellent way to brood pheasants. The whole room is heated to 85 degrees and heat lights are hung to get floor to 105 degrees directly under heat source. From here they will be move to a B room maintained at 75 degrees, and 95 under heat.

How to help your gamebirds by doing nothing.

How to help your gamebirds by doing nothing. — The tendency for most land managers is to either maximize crop production or esthetic beauty of there ground.
I am asked regularly about what the perfect plantings would be to attract and maintain a reproductive pheasant population. My response is often not what is expected. Looking back the best PHEASANT populations didn't coincide with intensive management of wildlife habitat. Typically the farms and fields that held the most pheasants where those that were owned or taken care of by a farmer much too busy to mow and trim and a manicure. Maximizing crop planting has played its part in the decline of gamebirds, but I argue that the real silent killer is making farms look like golf courses.
When pheasant hens nest they look for wide sections of tall grass and other vegetation. In my next article we will discuss how width of cover can be critical in affecting nest success.

Family farms throughout Illinois, like the Hasselmann Family Farm, that sell fresh beef, pork, and eggs, have seen a large spike in demand from customers. Other processors like Magro's Meat & Produce are seeing similar increases while Sullivan Pheasant & Game Farm is taking a wait-and-see approach, hoping restaurants are able to reopen soon.
