Irina, the Greenville Zoo’s four-year-old Amur leopard, got out of her enclosure early this morning. Police received the call at 8:42 a.m. and responded alongside zoo staff, who set up a perimeter following the zoo’s emergency protocols and moved guests and employees to secure locations as a precaution. The zoo and Cleveland Park both closed while the response was underway.

The zoo’s emergency response team tranquilized Irina around 9:20 a.m. and, after a second precautionary dose, carried her back to the secured leopard den. She was unharmed. Police Chief Howie Thompson confirmed she stayed within zoo grounds the entire time and that the public was never at risk. Cleveland Park reopened before 10 a.m.

The zoo’s male leopard and Irina’s two cubs stayed safely in their exhibit throughout. Irina came to Greenville from the St. Louis Zoo in 2024 and gave birth to the twins on May 17 — her first litter.

Staff are still investigating how she got out. The zoo remains closed for now.
