MooHogz BBQ: A 4.75-Oinker Surprise at Greenville’s Commons

Meet the BBQ Snobs — Two BBQ-obsessed buddies with over 20 years of smokin’, grillin’, and meat-lovin’ experience. One’s a battle-hardened retired Marine, the other a boardroom warrior from the tech world, but together we share one sacred mission: find the holy grail of barbecue. Armed with tongs, wit, and a healthy appetite, we travel the country rating BBQ joints on our infamous 1-to-5 oinker scale — where 1 oinker is “send it back to the pit” and 5 oinkers is pure smoky perfection. We take our meat seriously, but ourselves? Not so much.

The Setup: Food Hall Skepticism

If you haven’t tried MooHogz Craft BBQ in Greenville, SC — and you love real-deal Texas-style BBQ — you’re seriously missing out.

I’ll admit it: I was skeptical. I mean… how good can a BBQ spot be if it’s located in a food hall? I half-expected to see an Orange Julius next to it. MooHogz is located inside The Commons Food Hall at Unity Park, a slick new urban green space with trails, playgrounds, and a brewery vibe just west of Downtown Greenville. Cool location, but BBQ in a food court?

Color me surprised.

First Impressions

I got there around 12:30 PM. The park was buzzing, the Commons was packed, and the smell hit me before I even saw the kiosk: that unmistakable sweet oak smoke. Big points already.

MooHogz’s setup is clean, welcoming, and no-nonsense. The meats of the day: Brisket, Pulled Pork, Turkey, and Jackfruit. Sides: Mac & Cheese, Slaw, Baked Beans, Green Beans. They also sell ribs on Saturday.

When my fellow BBQ Snob arrived, we ordered two platters and decided to share the meats — all in the name of fairness and science.

The Meat Report

Pulled Pork Platter (w/ Mac & Cheese + Baked Beans):
The pork was tender, juicy, and packed with bold, clean smoke flavor. It struck that rare balance — smoky but not overwhelming, rich but not greasy. This wasn't fast-food meat or something churned out for tourists. You could taste the hours it took to get here. 4.8 oinkers.

Brisket Platter (w/ Slaw + Mac & Cheese):

Visibly gorgeous smoke ring, soft enough to cut with a fork, and had that beautifully seasoned peppery bark you expect in a true Texas brisket. Every bite sang. 4.7 oinkers.

Side Hustle

Let’s talk sides.
My partner in pork crime claimed the slaw was the best he’s ever had — and yeah, I agreed. Think KFC’s tangy-sweet flavor, but made fresh, with real crunch and love.

The Mac & Cheese was creamy, cheesy, and comforting, not overdone or gimmicky. Baked Beans were smoky and hearty.
Next up: the baked beans. They had a unique twist—maybe a dash of nutmeg? Solid flavor overall, though a little on the sweet side for this BBQ snob’s palate.

Drinks & (Lack of) Dessert

For beverages, they sell an assortment of soda, water, and their own bottled sweet tea. I do wish they had unsweet tea, but well — we are in the South. No desserts, but honestly, you didn’t really need it. Forget dessert—great BBQ is the dessert.
Worth Every Penny? You Bet.
One meat, two sides, and a drink with tip ran around $25 — which is on par with most respectable BBQ joints. They also offer a sampler with three meats for $42 if you're looking to try a bit of everything.
Final Oinker Rating: 4.75 (out of 5) Oinkers
We almost couldn’t believe we were sitting in a food court. MooHogz isn’t just “good for a food hall”—this is some of the best BBQ we’ve had. Period. Texas-style brisket, rich pulled pork, killer slaw — they’ve got the smoke, the flavor, and the heart of BBQ done right.

✅ Real oak-wood smoke
✅ Proper time and attention
✅ No shortcuts, no gimmicks
✅ Flavor that punches above its setting

Final Thoughts

We came in skeptical… we left almost giving out our first perfect score. MooHogz might just be Greenville’s BBQ sleeper hit. If you’re in the area — especially at Unity Park — make this your lunch stop. You won’t regret it.

If you are expecting a quiet, sit-down meal with table service, this is not for you. It’s loud, you’re sitting in close proximity to others — including screaming kids — but none of that mattered as soon as you take that first bite. But isn’t good BBQ about the food, not the ambiance or the expérience gastronomique? Mayber not every time but today it was.

And if you see two BBQ nerds hovering over a platter and arguing about oinker decimals… come say hi. We're just out here chasing that elusive 5-oinker bite.
