We managed to get kid’s body temp back up but after hours of being separated from mom, mama goat, aka “Bubbles”, rejected him which we knew might happen but have had success in the past. So now we have a bottle baby. Was able to milk mama goat to get that good colostrum in him within hours of his birth. Bubbles had two kids, male and female: Thomas Aquinas and still deciding on the female name. Our family’s theme this year for names is philosophers and theologians. 🤓

Just sitting with my mama goats waiting for their kids to be born…this might be my favorite part of farm life and getting to share it with my kids. Witnessing new life being born never gets old. ♥️

For Christmas dinner, of course we enjoyed some of our grass finished steaks! But one of our family members brought some filet mignon steaks that they had been gifted from Omaha Steaks. We thought we would share an example of what happens to beef when the cattle are not handled well! As you can see, the Omaha steaks are on the upper left and the other 4 steaks are Sixth Day Farms, Inc steaks. Notice the dark almost purple-ish color to the meat of the Omaha Steaks. That's what's called "dark cutting". While we have never eaten such meat, the industry will tell you that it's "fine" although I can tell you that it had a different texture while preparing it. While it may be "safe" to eat, do you really want to eat meat that you know for sure was not handled well? And our beef is available at Conscious Community Co-op!!

The top photo is of a cattle feedlot. The USDA states that somewhere around 40% of market beef in the United States is raised in a feedlot consisting of over 32,000 head of cattle!! The remaining 50% or so come from feedlots with 1,000 head. Raising beef in a feedlot is the most economical way to mass produce beef, but is this how you want your food produced? Here at Sixth Day Farms we don’t think this is what God meant when He gave humans “dominion” over the animals.

The bottom picture is of our goats this morning out enjoying the sunshine and pasture the way God created the animals to live. The only way to know for sure how your meat was raised is to buy local, like from Conscious Community Co-op!! Stay tuned, fresh goat meat will be at the coop this week!!!

Well, due to our lack of social media knowledge, we lost control of our previous farm page. We are the same family, we just no longer have control over the original Sixth Day Farms page. Hopefully, everyone that knew us on that page will find this one...

Who are we? Well, we don't get on social media much that's for sure. Who we are is a regular Oklahoma family that has fallen in love with livestock, stock handling history and how humans and livestock work with each other. We have also come to know how important it is to know where your food comes from.

We didn't grow up in the country, but God has graced us with the ability in our later years to have moved to Guthrie with our children. We have fallen in love with low stress livestock handling and animal husbandry. We've learned that some of the old ways of handling cattle, as in with horses, is actually the lowest stress way in which cattle can be handled.

In fact, Oregon State University conducted a study in which they compared cattle stress levels in those that were roped (but still with the herd) versus those that were separated in order to be placed in a cattle chute. What they found was that it was much less stressful for the cattle to be roped, so long as they're still in or near the herd. Keep in mind, ranch roping is a far cry from what you may have seen in rodeos. It's very different here on the ranch!

So, over the last several years we've been honing our craft and supplying our family and friends with healthy beef, and we're finally ready to open up to more families!
