When Mama Hen passed over the winter, it felt silly to make a Facebook post about her. But now, with spring coming, I find myself looking at the coop more and more, missing her deeply — and it feels even sillier not to honor her.

If you’ve ever talked chickens with me, you’ve heard about Mama Hen. I loved her the way many people love their dogs. I’ll miss her running down the driveway to greet me, making me stop the car so she could hop in and ride the rest of the way on my lap.

I’ll never forget the night a predator got into the coop. Mama Hen escaped, ran to our front door, and sat there clucking until we woke up — she saved the entire flock that night.

And of course, how she earned her name: Mama Hen spent a full week secretly stealing eggs from the other hens and carefully sitting on them until every single one hatched — safely in our warm garage. That winter she became our “garage chicken,” living inside while she learned how to be a mom.

She was the inspiration behind Happy Hatches. She wanted to be a mama so badly — and she was so good at it — that I knew I could introduce chicks into the flock at almost any time, and she would lovingly adopt and raise them as her own.

As one of our very first chickens, Mama Hen has raised most of the flock we have today — if not all of them.

She will be oh-so-very missed. 💛

If you were hoping for a spring kit, I encourage you to keep your eye on our page as I’ll post any left over kits here when/if they become available.

It’s almost that time of year again… the incubators are coming out, getting warmed up, and we’re officially kicking off hatch season!

Right now, we’re test-running our incubators with quail eggs and they’re expected to hatch THIS SUNDAY — the countdown is on! 🐥⏳

That means it’s time to start thinking about CHICKEN HATCHING KITS again!
