🥵➡️🌤️ **We’re pretty sure the chickens and pigs are celebrating Labor Day weekend right along with us!**

After several days of 90°+ temperatures and heat indexes pushing into the 100s, we’re all pretty happy to get a little break from the heat!

The chickens are enjoying being outside without looking quite so miserable, the pigs are loving the relief, and the humans here at Nine Acre Roots aren't complaining either. 😂🐔🐖

It may still be the 80s, but after the heat we've had, **80° feels pretty darn good!**

There’s always work to do around the farm, but weekends like this are a good reminder to slow down, enjoy the animals, enjoy the family, and be thankful for the opportunity to do what we do.

🌱 **Rooted in Him**

Life has been BUSY lately.

Between work, keeping up with the house and the farm, getting the girls to cheer, 4-H, horseback riding, and everything else that fills our days, there are plenty of moments when we look at everything that needs to get done and wonder, *“How are we ever going to do all of this?”*

But then we remember where our strength comes from.

**John 15:5 (NASB 1995)**

> *“I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”*

That verse is at the heart of **Nine Acre Roots**.

There are days when the work feels overwhelming. There are projects that don't go according to plan, schedules that get crazy, and times when there simply don't seem to be enough hours in the day.

But we know we're not doing this alone.

God is in control, and our job is to remain rooted in Him.

Just like healthy plants need strong roots to grow and produce fruit, **we need to stay rooted in Christ.** When we abide in Him, He gives us the strength to keep going, the wisdom to make the right decisions, and the peace to trust Him with the things we can't control.

The farm is something we're building with our hands, but our hope is that everything we build—our farm, our family, and our lives—points back to Him.

🐷 **WHY DID WE CHOOSE BERKSHIRE PIGS?** 🐷

When we decided to bring pigs back to Nine Acre Roots, we wanted to choose a breed that fit our goals as a **family farm**.

That's why we chose **purebred Berkshire pigs**.

Berkshires are known for producing pork with **rich flavor, tenderness, and beautiful marbling**. That marbling helps create juicy, flavorful pork—whether you're enjoying pork chops, bacon, ribs, sausage, or a slow-cooked roast.

But great pork isn't the only reason we chose them.

Berkshire pigs are also known for their generally **docile temperament**. As a family farm with kids involved in everyday life around the farm, the temperament of the animals we raise matters to us. We have to consider not only the quality of the food we're producing, but also the animals we're working with every day.

At Nine Acre Roots, we want to raise quality animals, involve our family in the process, and provide local families with the opportunity to know **where their food came from and how it was raised**. 🌱🐖

These four little Berkshires still have a lot of growing to do, and we're excited to share their journey along the way!

🐷 **HOW MUCH PORK CAN YOU EXPECT FROM A HALF OR WHOLE HOG?** 🐷

We've started taking reservations for our **farm-raised purebred Berkshire pork**, and we know one of the biggest questions is:

**How much meat will I actually get for my freezer?**

Our Berkshire pigs are expected to reach approximately **300 pounds live weight**.

Based on that estimated weight:

🐖 **WHOLE HOG**

• Approximately **215–220 pounds hanging weight**
• Approximately **140–155 pounds of packaged pork** for your freezer*
• Estimated cost to Nine Acre Roots: **approximately $735–$750** at $3.40 per pound hanging weight
• **$100 deposit** holds your whole hog

🐖 **HALF HOG**

• Approximately **108–110 pounds hanging weight**
• Approximately **70–78 pounds of packaged pork** for your freezer*
• Estimated cost to Nine Acre Roots: **approximately $368–$375** at $3.40 per pound hanging weight
• **$50 deposit** holds your half hog

🥓 **What can you expect in your freezer?**

Depending on how you choose to have your hog processed, your pork may include:

🥓 Bacon
🍖 Pork chops
🔥 Ribs
🌭 Sausage
🍔 Ground pork
🍖 Roasts
🥩 Ham and other cuts

**IMPORTANT:** The estimates above are based on an expected live weight of approximately 300 pounds. Actual hanging weight and packaged meat yield will vary based on the individual hog and the cuts you choose.

The price listed above is paid directly to **Nine Acre Roots** for the hog. Buyers are responsible for paying all slaughter and processing fees directly to **Stockyard Packing Company in Oxford, Ohio**.

🐷 NOW TAKING RESERVATIONS FOR FARM-RAISED BERKSHIRE PORK! 🐷

We're excited to announce that we are now accepting reservations for whole and half hogs from our current group of purebred Berkshire pigs!

Why Berkshire pork? 🐖

Berkshire pigs are well known for producing exceptionally flavorful, tender, and well-marbled pork. Their meat is prized for its rich taste and quality—making everything from pork chops and bacon to sausage, ribs, and roasts something special for your family's table.

Our four Berkshire pigs are just 8 weeks old and will be raised right here at Nine Acre Roots. Three of them will eventually head to customers' freezers!

We currently have a limited number of pigs available, and we're beginning to take reservations now so families can secure their locally raised pork.

🐷 **The pigs are back at Nine Acre Roots!** 🐷

We’re excited to welcome **four purebred Berkshire pigs** to the farm! They’re just **8 weeks old** and have already settled in nicely.

Berkshires are known for their excellent meat quality, and we’re looking forward to watching these four grow over the coming months. 🌱🐖

It’s exciting to have pigs back on the farm, and we can’t wait to share their progress with you as they grow!

It seems odd to say that summer is coming to a close on August 5th, but that's the life of a teacher! I head back to work tomorrow, and it's hard to believe I've been on summer break since late May. The time has absolutely flown by.

This summer was filled with adventure, family, and making memories. As a family, we visited Kings Island five or six times, hiked at Hueston Woods State Park, spent days swimming at the lake, cooled off at a couple of splash pads, and watched the girls enjoy weekly horseback riding lessons and cheer camp. We also took in a Reds game, installed a 24-foot above-ground pool, and topped it all off with an unforgettable week in Orange Beach, Alabama.

While in Alabama, we spent our days relaxing on the beach and by the pool, drove over to Pensacola to watch the Blue Angels practice, went on a dolphin cruise, enjoyed way too much ice cream, and, most importantly, made memories together as a family.

Back here at Nine Acre Roots, life never slows down. The chickens continue to keep us stocked with fresh eggs, the tomatoes are ripening, the squash, beans, corn, and sunflowers are thriving, and the zinnias are in full bloom. Every season brings something new to appreciate.

As summer winds down, I'm looking forward to a great school year, a bountiful harvest, and welcoming pigs back to the farm this fall. Thank you to everyone who has supported Nine Acre Roots this year. We appreciate every like, comment, share, and purchase. Here's to a wonderful fall season!

There’s nothing quite like seeing those first signs of success in the garden! 🌱
