Look what arrived last night. We ordered these during our visit to Michigan in February. A lot has changed since then, but we still want to make sure anyone interested in growing hops has access to clean plants at an affordable price. Sandy Ridge Farms has once again provided us with beautiful, field ready, hops.
We have about 30 that still need a home. They were originally going to be for sale next weekend Old 690 Brewing Company for Gardens in the Gap. This is the perfect time to plant these perennials.

Doing things on a small scale is hard work and can be frustrating at times... but we aren’t in this alone. It’s nice to see how others overcome some of the same obstacles we face.

Putting the final touches on our next episode of Virginia Farming. We are really excited about this episode which we are calling “Small and Mighty.” We talked with some truly innovative and non-traditional Virginia farmers, herbalists and modern homesteaders (yes, they actually live off the land) who had some thought-provoking things to say. This episode airs on VPM this Saturday morning at 8 AM and Sunday morning at 8:30 AM. Then nationwide next Thursday on RFD-TV at 8:30 AM Eastern, and then on-demand online. We hope you enjoy meeting these farmers as much as we did.

We took a quick trip to Grand Rapids Monday. Founders Brewing Co. had some of the best hospitality of any large brewery we have visited, you could smell the wort on the whole block! Brewery Vivant, set in an old church/funeral home, had very yummy and diverse beer with solid offerings using locally grown Michigan hops. DO NOT skip on the food, the andouille and grits was AMAZING!
The real highlight for us was Tuesday when we toured Sandy Ridge Farm and Hop Head Farms. This was the biggest nursery/greenhouse operation and hop production facility we have ever seen. The attention to details in propagating hops for growers is so appreciated, we are excited to work more with Sandy Ridge. While we don't believe we will ever be as big as Hop Head, we walked away ( I mean drove home 9 hours) knowing what we do here is in line with the best in the country.

Scientists examine potential economic impact of spotted lanternfly in Pa. | Penn State University

Right now they are egg masses that will look like a mud patch on a tree. If you find one, scrape it off and either burn it, or put it in a ziplock and submit it to your local Cooperative extension office to confirm its identity.

If not contained, the spotted lanternfly potentially could drain Pennsylvania’s economy of at least $324 million annually and cause the loss of about 2,800 jobs, according to a study carried out by economists in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences.

Mycorrhizal fungi: all you need to know about the Internet of Plants

We have spent a lot of time working the soil in the hop yard. The plants demand a balance of readily available nutrients. Taking soil samples on a consistent basis helps us to determine if we are “getting it right”. Learning about beneficial fungi has helped us develop more sustainable practices using less chemicals.

Inoculating plants with them has been claimed to benefit their growth. But the scientific evidence might surprise you.

Last call! We need your help with our end-of-season 2019 survey! Please complete this survey for your Virginia production by November 1st: https://vce.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_25XUJXaTCdnscMl

As you know, interest in hops production in our region has grown over the past few years, and to help measure changes, inform stakeholders, and support research and education, we conduct an annual survey to capture state-wide crop information.

You should take this survey if you are in Virginia and consider yourself a commercial grower (aka, if you intend to sell your hops, if you are a farm brewery that intends to use the hops that you grow, or if you otherwise grow hops for purposes other than strict hobby). You can categorize your operation as "commercial" independent of planting size--small sites count! If you planted hops but have not yet harvested a marketable/useable quantity of hops, we would still like you to take the survey.

This survey enables you to skip questions. However, your willingness to complete this information will equip us with more useful results. The survey should take ~7-10 minutes to complete and can be taken on mobile devices.

The survey will close November 1st. I may send one additional reminder email; I apologize if you have received this email in error--please disregard.

What will we do with this information? You will remain anonymous. The results will be summarized for informational presentations, publications, and reports to growers, stakeholders, and the public.

Growers, please note: We have Extension resources for hops, including some new ones! Visit our hops page on the Virginia Cooperative Extension Website for a complete listing of publications, useful links, and services available to you: http://www.ext.vt.edu/topics/agriculture/commercial-horticulture/hops/index.html

This is a great update on Virginia hops. It hasn’t been easy, but every year we are getting better. As we find new (to us) varieties, better suited to our climate and soils the industry will grow. It has been fun working with a community of Trail Blazers. #loudounhops #AginCraft #HopPossible

Growers like Mark Clabaugh are bringing hops to the New River Valley, and researchers like Virginia Tech School of Plant and Environmental Sciences Assistant Professor Holly Scoggins are working to fill information gaps around the crop. As hundreds of Virginia craft brewers look for unique local ingredients and flavors, writes Tonia Moxley of the The Roanoke Times, local hops growers stand to benefit from a better understanding of growing the crop in their region.

We will be ripping out the two rows of Centennial on the left. As you can see, they do not like our growing conditions compared to our other varieties (Comet on the right). For the effort it doesn’t have reward. If you know anyone (we recommend north of VA) that wants some hearty plants to put in the ground this fall DM to make arrangements.

It’s been a hard year. The rain continues to kick our ass. We pulled half of our centennial due to disease pressure. The lack of a proper photo period stunted the growth of most of the plants because of all the rain and overcast conditions here in northern VA. Even so we do have some plants producing a solid product. #MakingLemonaid #HamiltonHops #hopyard #hops

New Hop Varieties are on the way!!!
A little under 1lb of hop shoots... I think 🤔 2lbs to go.
The plants seem to be holding up well to the HOT HOT HOT weather. Lots of lupulin visible on the centennial plants. 🌱🙌🏻🍻
Quality control on one of our most mature cones to date. The smell is a bit lemongrass. Slightly sticky lupulin and the cone is almost fluffy. These will be part of our first acid test group. It's getting real! #hamiltonhops #wearegrowingup 🍻🌱💚
In the mail today... Guess this is a sign I need to make some notes 🤓🌱✒️📚
