Alpaca 101 - Part 9: Aloofness

Alpacas are generally very aloof animals.

Can it be overcome? Absolutely.

Alpacas don’t give attention freely.

They’re deeply tuned into body language and emotion,
which means connection with them shouldn’t be forced.

If you try too hard to interact with them,
you’ll often get the exact opposite response.

Give them space, stay calm, and let them decide.

They’ll often choose to come closer—
especially when it’s quiet, you’re relaxed,
and everything is on their terms.

Baxter here might not run up to greet you…
but if he approaches and stays, you’ve already been accepted

We’re excited to launch a limited run of our dryer balls made exclusively from Baxter, Ace, & Rocky’s fleece.

Since Rocky’s arrival in 2024, I had the idea to create a dryer ball set with just the boys’ fleece. This year, we had enough fiber from each of them to do it.

Alpaca 101 - Part 7: Pronking

When you see alpacas bouncing around the pasture like popcorn, they’re pronking.

When they pronk, all four feet leave the ground at the same time, often with a stiff-legged posture.

Sometimes you’ll notice an alpaca with a lot of spring in their hind-quarters giving them a “boing-boing” appearance as they pronk. 😄

Pronking is a playful and happy activity on our farm. It means they’re happy and having fun with whatever they are doing at the moment.

Two months until shearing day, and we got a peek at their fleeces during herd health today. Here’s a sampling of some of their coats.

The herd is going to be so happy to be rid of their heavy coats when the warm weather comes. It’s the primary reason we shear.

Cleaning their fleeces all summer to make yarn is a bonus for me.

Guess what day it is!!
