A neat comparison of the C313Y Myostatin Gene at work. This variant of myostatin is unique only to the Piedmontese breed. (And why they taste so good!)
Fullblood Piedmontese Cattle are Homozyous for this variant, or have “2 copies” of the gene.
Piedmontese cross animals can either have 2 copies (homozygous), but more commonly have 1 copy (heterozygous) of the gene dependent on the sire/dam cross status.
Here you can see on the left, a Hereford calf. With 0 copies of the C313Y Myostatin Gene.
In the Middle is a “1 copy” heifer calf. Dam is a 0 copy Hereford cow, sire is a 2 copy Fullblood Piedmontese Bull. Because the sire is Homozyous, he will always pass down 1 gene of the myostatin. Giving the heifer 1 copy of the C313Y myostatin gene and why you can see she has some defined muscling.
On the right is a “2 copy” Full blood Piedmontese Bull Calf, with very obvious muscling.
All 3 calves are within 30 days of age of one another. And unironically, the youngest is the fullblood calf, who just so happens to weigh the most out of the 3.

And if you’re looking to get into the breed yourself. It’s worth noting Piedmontese cattle tend to be more feed effecient at the bunk. (Pounds ate turn more quickly into pounds gained)
They grade significantly higher in meat quality, and have a higher carcass weight % then other beef breeds (more edible beef per animal and less waste),
They are also noted to be a dual purpose breed (beef and milk) in their homeland of Italy.
AND they are known in the states for being both cold hardy in the winter and heat resistant in the summer!
