Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. As I prepared orders today and did some prep for our family meal, I did some reminiscing.
As I rolled out pie dough, I used one of Brandon’s grandma’s rolling pins. I was never fortunate enough to meet either but I love that I get to use something that provided delicious meals from the effort of her hands two generations ago. There might be new-fangled fancy ones but I love this wooden one. It reminds me of the one my mom used as well. 💕
I made pies using the recipe from my Mamaw. I even have her recipe for the pumpkin custard- it makes 3 pies per batch! The leftover pie crust was used to make “cinnamon rolls” just like she always does and she tells about them doing it when she was growing up. 🥧
Pies are sentimental for me from the other side of the family as well. It was always my aunt’s job but even though we don’t gather anymore, I still remember her Pecan Pie. She also made an awesome Sugar Cream Pie!!
I could go on and on- most of it has a story or connection. The noodles, deviled eggs, rolls, salads, mashed potatoes, dressing (even though it’s not for me), sweet potatoes, and other things that aren’t coming to mind now- all have a piece of the holiday.
Baking brings me joy and relaxes me. I’m thankful for being able to bake. I’m thankful for the gift of being able to get my bakes to turn out. I’m thankful for being able to share my bakes with all of you!!
Do you have a Thanksgiving must-have, recipe, or tradition that is special to you? If so, what is it?
