We call this Bearding🧔: the foragers come home but it's too darn hot in the hive for everyone 🥵
The larvae must be kept at consistent temperature and humidity 👼 so during heat waves only the nursery bees🤱 and queen👑 stay inside while the others take turns fanning with their wings🪽
Hang in there sisters! ⛓️🤙

🌈🥕 Hi, we’re Drew and Krista, the faces behind Kickin Karrot Homostead! 🥕🌈
Our story started in 2023, when we fell in love and quickly realized we wanted to build a life together. When we moved in, we combined our little families—I already had goats and ducks, we each had cats, and before long we were adding even more animals to the mix. Together we adopted more goats and our beloved parrots, Pantera and Toliver.
As a q***r, interabled couple, we’ve built our homestead around compassion, community, and the belief that every living thing deserves a chance to thrive. What started as a shared love for animals and simple living has grown into a busy, joy-filled life filled with rescued animals, honeybees, gardening, baking, and more than a little bit of chaos.
Life hasn’t always gone according to plan. I live with a progressive neuromuscular disease called Mitochondrial disease, and last year I spent 8 weeks in the hospital. During that time, Krista made the difficult decision to leave her job and become my full-time caregiver. Through every challenge, we’ve learned to adapt, problem-solve, and build a life that works for us.
Last fall, after everything we’d been through together, we got engaged. ❤️
Running a homestead while navigating disability has taught us that homesteading doesn’t have to fit a picture-perfect mold. Some days are productive and full of projects, while other days are slower and focused on caring for ourselves and our animals. Both are important, and both are part of the journey.
Here you’ll find the real side of homestead life—the successes, the setbacks, the muddy boots, the garden harvests, the baking projects, and the endless animal shenanigans. Whether we’re tending the garden, collecting honey from our hives, caring for our rescue animals, or dreaming up our next project, we’re excited to share it with you.
Thank you for being here and supporting our little corner of the world. We can’t wait to share this journey with you. 🐐🐝🦜🌻🦆
