Last Saturday was our last day at the farmers market. We do and will continue to sell our honey and products out of our house.

Come visit us at the North branch farmers market today from 8-noon.
Today Kevin has made and brought to sell at the farmers market baklava. It is a Greek pastry that uses a syrup made with honey.

Come visit us on Saturday at the North Branch Farmers Market.

Our activities with the bees are starting to pickup.

2nd weekend of March I placed pollen patties and some winter patties on the hives to carry them through a few more weeks. March 28th weekend it looks like we may pull the winter covers and possibly do some reversals. Will see if temperature forecast allow for it. I will be getting 6 - 8 hives ready for a new location. We are locating some hives near Moulton’s Vineyard and Orchard to help with pollination and to have another location to get honey. This will be a permanent spot. I am converting our home location into our NUC and breeding yard. We will split colonies, start nuc’s and raise queens at our house since it’s easier to manage those close by. We are also painting equipment, getting rid of old comb and getting equipment ready for some new packages we ordered. Even though we had good wintering, I always like to keep new packages in the mix. Eventually when we get our Nuc program in full swing, we should be able to eliminate ordering bees.

Just a heads up, if you want to help combat your spring allergies you should start taking your bee pollen. Start out slow if you haven’t taking it throughout the winter you should begin with a quarter teaspoon and work yourself up to at least a teaspoon a day.

Our great labor laws at work driving up the package bee prices. 11 years ago you could get a package for 50.00 , they are now 161.00 per 3 lbs of bees. Here is the reason why.

This increase has to do with labor law in California. Workers for the bee industry are considered farm workers. The law on overtime rules changed for 2020. The law used to state, that farm workers got time and a half after 60 hours of work. The new law for 2020 now has farm workers in California getting time and a half after 40 hours. During the package bee season, package bee producers are working their crews, 10 - 12 hours a day. Usually seven days a week for six to eight weeks. So last year, the crews of workers were getting premium time for 10 hours a week in a 70 hour work week. Now in 2020 the workers working a 70 hour work week, are getting premium time for 30 hours a week. The package bee producers had two choices to make over this change in labor law. Either your crews work normal hours and reduce the amount of package bees you sell or, increase the price of the package bees and sell the same quantity of package bees. The labor market for available workers is very tight at the moment. It is hard to get qualified people who want to put on a full pair of coveralls in 90 degree plus weather. Open up boxes of stinging insects, shake them into small boxes and send them to another state. Working all day, 70 hours a week, rain or shine.

Bee Beard Demonstration

Anybody going to the Minnesota State fair today you might want to check out the bee beard at 1 o’clock at the agriculture horticulture building.

For the 21st consecutive year, Gary Reuter from the University of Minnesota Bee Lab, will perform the daring feat of placing 10,000 honey bees on the faces of two brave volunteers, forming a living beard of bees. How?! Why?! This is a spectacular sight and a memorable experience for participants...
