The Bible Belt is a place I’ve always lived. I speak from experience. My experience.
Sunday services. Wednesday night meetings. 5th Sunday communion. Casseroles for every baptism and funeral. Church pews filled every week. Bibles under our arms and bless your heart on our lips.
And yet, look around. Some of the very places most saturated in religion are drowning in poverty, addiction, alcoholism, broken families, and hopelessness. Maybe we need to start asking ourselves why?
Because you can know the KJV backward and forward and still completely miss the heart of the Gospel. You can memorize every verse and never actually know Jesus.
If you aren’t filtering Scripture through the lens of Jesus; His love, His mercy, His compassion, and His sacrifice, you can miss the point entirely.
And I hate to tell you this but that girl who overdosed last month and then walked through the doors of your little town church?
She is not too far gone for Jesus.
That single mother barely holding it together after her second divorce?
She is not disqualified from grace.
The person who cussed last week?
God didn’t stop loving them.
The addict sitting in the back pew still active in their addictions?
Jesus sees them.
The person whose life is an absolute mess?
Jesus isn’t standing at the door demanding they clean themselves up before He lets them in.
And yes, sometimes the person we think is the least deserving of grace is the very person Jesus is pursuing the hardest. “The last will come first in the Kingdom”.
Meanwhile, you can sit in your two piece suits, quote Scripture, judge everybody around you, and still completely miss the Savior when He is standing right in front of you.
Grace isn’t a reward for people who got it right.
Grace is what we desperately need because none of us got it right. None. Of. Us.
So before you decide who is worthy of Jesus’ love, remember this:
You didn’t earn your way there either.
Jesus did. He is love. Period.
