Started harvesting sunflower heads. Cheesecloth, tied up with a rubber band hung on hooks upside down in the shed. Going to see how this goes, to let these seeds finish ripening and drying. We've grown and harvested many times before, this one's a new method for us.

Homesteading sometimes is....
..waking up early to catch another swarm..dealing with humidity and extreme heat advisory..beating a storm, that really never showed up 🙄..using the entire family to get the job done🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒.. burning bad frames and wood pieces🔥

Sometimes it's not rainbows and butterflies but sweat and wax moths.🥵🦋

Sometimes homesteading requires us to do more and that is okay.

What a day!
It was a struggle in the heat but we managed to catch the second swarm from the same hive that swarmed Saturday, to pull stuff out of the shed (clean and reorganize it), while simultaneously pull ALL the hive boxes and frames out to rid them of wax moth and larvae infestation, scrape and collect wax to melt, and do 2 hive inspections.

Roy experienced an early Father's Day gift. 😁🐝
Our top bar hive swarmed this afternoon, and we swiftly responded by gathering necessary equipment and obtaining permission from our neighbors to collect the swarm from their bush.
Following a prompt intervention, we are optimistic about the new hive's prospects. This brings our total number of hives to three. Although this development may appear insignificant to outsiders, it represents a substantial achievement for us. Notably, we lost three out of four hives during this past winter due to the severe weather conditions in Eastern NC, which also affected bigger local bee farmers. Mother nature can indeed be unpredictable.

Tell us what creative things you do to mark when you direct sow.
We'll go first,
I cut out the bottoms of these seedling containers to mark where each bush bean is and then I made sure most of this was into the ground so that the wind wouldn't pick it up. I believe this serves a number of things for me. I am able to differentiate between a w**d and the plant, I am able to monitor their growth, soil conditions and if a critter has taken it..also I have learned in the past that this stops the one insect the cuts a circle around the stem, mainly the base of plants (forgot the name).
Now,
Let's see your creative methods below in the comments!
