Chefs Serving our Nations Finest Staff Chefs at the Warrior Retreat at Bull Run The Visiting Chef Program partners with exceptional volunteer restaurant, catering, military, and personal chefs who come to the Warrior Retreat at Bull Run in Haymarket, VA and create once in a lifetime extraordinary meals for our injured warriors and their families.

Willing Warriors provides a much-needed break for the warriors to relax, enjoy quality time with their families, and bond together.

For last nights dinner for a local deputy that I had over to the house, I decided on a Greek theme.

Tomorrow night instead of providing a dinner for a member of our military at The Retreat, I'll be hosting one for a member of the Warren County Sheriff's Dept. in my home. I'm thinking of going with a Greek theme... Stay tuned!

During this time of in-action and quarantine, we are thinking outside of the box on how to promote a method of fundraising for our Visiting Chef Program, and how we can support exceptional Chef meals for our nations warriors once we are able to host them again.

While there is no definitive announcements yet, we are currently working on the logistics of offering seasonings and spice blends, compound butters, and flavor infused oils for retail sale with a portion of proceeds directly benefiting our warrior guests and their families.

Stay tuned for details throughout the coming weeks as we attempt to finalize the details and processes.

I, as Executive Event Chef with a team of staff chefs are preparing a unique meal this Sunday at The Warrior Retreat at Bull Run for 16 guests.

For the first time ever The Visiting Chef Program team will not be preparing a meal for an honored active duty warrior or veteran guest... We will be preparing a meal for our Guest Stay Coordinator team.

These Ladies and Gentlemen go above and beyond behind the scenes for our weekly honored guests. From scheduling free (donated) activities within the community, to babysitting, they are the ones who ensure that every guest has all of their wants and desires addressed and no detail, no matter how minute... is overlooked.

While the VCP program generally gets the accolades from our guests as the top experience of their stay, without this team of dedicated volunteers, what we do wouldn't be possible.

It is my... and our honor... to recognize them.

You've earned this, you deserve this, and we appreciate you. Come hungry.

There are many instances when the Chefs who volunteer have the opportunity to work with the children of our active duty warriors or veterans. This young lady was special, and through the influence and power not of this earth, met two professionals who have taken her desire to be one of us under their wing. Even though home is several states away, this child is now being mentored in the culinary arts by them. By the time she is old enough to attend culinary school, she will be beyond ready for the title.

Our Chefs dedication does not stop at the volunteerism of their time and effort to provide a single meal... often the relationships they build go far beyond.

After all... It's not just the warriors we serve... It's the family of warriors who support THEIR warriors...

Every military guest and their family that stays at The Warrior Retreat at Bull Run receives a multi course meal, and no two meals are ever the same. One of the standard courses is ... of course... the salad.

Our chefs have gone from traditional, and simple... to complex and elegant. Every salad though is given the same attention to detail as every other element of the dining experience provided, some even as far as made from scratch dressings.

The benefits to the Warrior and their family are overwhelming. We realize all our combat wounded Warrior guests suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress and their spouses report it has often been years since they have been out to a restaurant. Our volunteer chefs bring a culinary experience to the family they almost always described as the best meal they have had. The families learn valuable cooking tips from the chefs and everyone has a wonderful time. Here is a great article about the program from the Food Section of the Washington Post.

Put me in, Coach Ken! Very excited to be at the helm with this crew tomorrow evening preparing a 5 course meal for this week's warrior and family who have given so much for us. They like bbq, Chinese and Mexican. So, I/we riffed on a fusion menu. Cannot wait!! Pics to follow from our Fearless Leader, Larry Zilliox! Menu Course 1 - Tostada with a white bean green chili puree, topped with a smoked chinese bbq beef, sesame seeds, chives Course 2- Butternut squash souffle (ancho chili, mexican chocolate infusion) Lime crema drizzle Course 3 - Jicama and Mixed Green Salad (cilantro/lime vinaigrette, manchego cheese shavings, pepitas, cracked pink pepper corns) Main Chicken Tinga tacos. Mild chili, citrus, agave, braised chicken served on a warm soft tortilla with house pickled onion, jalapeno, lime crema, cotija cheese and cilantro Dessert Flan w/caramel sauce and fresh strawberries
We have a special piece in our heart for all of these chefs that go far and beyond for our families. We have the blessing to be guest (my warrior, our kids and I) last year and the bond we create with them is unique and special to our family specially to our daughter Zianny who is 10 now and since really little her dream has always been to be a great chef. The caring, kindness and love that this gentlemen spreads make her more enthusiastic to continue her dream. They allowed her to help in the kitchen, later gave her the surprise to bring her back and be their sous chef and the most recent blessing: to be mentor by the best! We cannot thank you enough to give her confidence, and specially to make her believe she is worthy to have dreams and try to be the best! God bless you all!!!!!!!!
Two years ago we had a unique experience, we had a delightful dinner cooked and served by Chef Ken Gardner, he surprised us with an amazing dinner and dessert, thank you my friend for everything you do for all of the families at the retreat.
