Round 2 of harvesting beans!

I grabbed what I could from the garden while the rain stopped. This should fill the canner, and should get us to a more comfortable amount to have preserved.

Tomatoes are turning red, the heavy rain is causing them to split. I cleared the plants and will have to let them sit on the corner to finish ripening.

I did a thing this spring 😳😳😳
I planted Romas in organized rows, but they started looking bad. I replaced several of the plants with more Romas. But I also bought Amish paste. And San Marzano. And beef steak. And then my peppers looked bad, so I bought more peppers-but then tomatoes were half off at the nursery so I grabbed Celebrity, and Rapunzel, and more grape and midnight cherry..a few other varieties 😂😂😂…now I don’t remember what replaced what. My “organized rows” are now a “what the heck is this” ordeal .

What I thought were Romas look like Amish paste, San Marzano is in 2 different spots , and I never got around to staking my final plants which are now laying in a pretty pile on top of each other in the middle of the garden.

I am genuinely entertained by the chaos out there. 100% unbothered.

I don’t have to participate in the world around me today, for that I am grateful. Our area has been getting hit hard by storms and tornadoes, it has been a scary year. This summer has been a series of sirens and warnings, power outages and flooding, taking cover then cleaning up the aftermath …our roof was finally replaced last month after 80 mph straight-line winds ripped through here in April. Yesterday brought 100mph winds and tornadoes leaving 95% of the neighboring county with no power. Everyone is looking for gas, everyone is looking for food, everyone is trying to help each other while helping themselves get to the other side of this.

My homegrown pantry is empty right now. Jars are empty. My canners are dusty and for the first time I checked the rubber seals for signs of dry rot or cracking. This season has opened my eyes to the reality of how much is taken for granted. How much we rely on things to be there, how much pandemonium ensues when they are not.

I am going about my day with a renewed sense of why…why I grow food, why I preserve it, why I put my own systems in place, why I should trust my gut and take daily action, why I should prepare and plan ahead …at the end of the day I’ll have around 20 pints of beans to put up, a good start to the canning season.

It’s August, I guess I’ll have to accept that fall will be on its way soon. I spent yesterday prepping for the fall garden, cutting back the sunflowers that have given so much, and pulling weeds away from my summer plants.

Storms rolled through our area last night, it was a good time to take care of this sugar pumpkin that fell off the vine.

My first time growing and using a sugar pumpkins, I think I’m hooked. Pumpkin seeds were perfect, pumpkin bread was delicious, and the leftover purée is in the freezer for another day.
