Here is more information on Project FeederWatch... Sign up in September to obtain this poster and begin your own backyard project to help our bird populations....

Are you ready for the upcoming FeederWatch season? Good news - when you sign up in September, we'll send you our gorgeous new sparrow identification poster. Join or Renew today here: https://buff.ly/3tS2ujU

Sparrows can be especially tricky to identify, with their muted brown and chestnut coloration, various streaks and spots, and similar sizes and behaviors. This poster is a great tool to help FeederWatchers distinguish these little brown birds.

This is a limited time offer that is only available in the U.S. Offer ends September 30th, 2025.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology has great information about birds such as this post displays. It is also just about time to sign up for Project FeederWatch where your family can count birds that use your feeders over the winter and help with increasing their scientific findings on over-wintering birds.

QUIZ ANSWER: This week’s mystery bird—with its yellow underparts, pinkish bill, and dark wings—might at first glance suggest a female American Goldfinch in breeding plumage. But an American Goldfinch has a shorter, conical bill and two white wingbars on all-black wings. Mostly yellow warblers, such as Yellow and Wilson’s Warblers, can be ruled out due to their smaller, finer bills. The list of yellowish birds in New Jersey, where this quiz bird was photographed, includes two species—Summer and Scarlet Tanagers—best known for the brilliant red plumage of breeding males. But females and immatures of the two species, along with nonbreeding Scarlet Tanager males, display more subdued colors. These “female-type” plumages of Summer and Scarlet Tanagers are similar, but Summer Tanager has a noticeably larger bill, is usually brownish or orange-yellow overall, and lacks contrast between the wings and the rest of the body. This week’s quiz bird, with its blackish wings contrasting with olive-green upperparts and yellow underparts, is a SCARLET TANAGER. Its scientific name, Piranga olivacea, references the olive-green plumage seen here, while its common name (“tanager”) belies its current classification as a member of the cardinal family. To learn more about this species visit All About Birds: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Scarlet_Tanager Thanks to Erica Heusser for sharing this photo with eBird and the Macaulay Library archive.

We finally have tomatoes that are decent enough to sell. This hot, damp weather has been really hard on many crops this summer... Check out the crop I picked today and come early to get the best selection. (We'll be setting up by 4 pm and sales can be processed before the official 5:30 start time.) This morning I picked Tomatoes... Tomorrow morning will be a variety of green and yellow snap beans, Yard long Beans, Eggplant, Peppers, Kale, Swiss Chard, Cucumbers (we have a few of our unique Lemon Cucumbers ready to harvest... The Armenian cukes are still tiny and developing) The first Okra are setting on now, and a couple of Tomatillos are bursting their seams too. Who knows what I will find as Sugar and Spice take me exploring and Tommy points out what he has found most recently.... Now to introduce our newest garden explorer: Itty Bitty atop Sugar as fresh spring water is brought to the garden...

Our Story

We provide native plants and encourage a natural diversity of wildlife in a sustainable healthy environment using organic practices. We propagate our local eco-type natives through seed or vegetative processes. This is a very small operation... On-site visits are by appointment or when I'm on the property. We are in search of a location in Connecticut or Dutchess County, NY that has room for demonstration gardens, workshops, a large library of nature/farming/gardening/wildlife-habitat books, etc. Our "Native Plant Wildlife Habitat Education Center" is a work in progress. please contact Ellen: if you are interested in helping to grow this education center.
