Another video of the strawberry planter
Planting Day! We pushed through the rain this morning and got all the fruit plants and trees in the ground! We planted Contender peaches, Ouachita blackberries, and a new section of strawberries with the help of our awesome crew! Bruce Haschemeyer, Terry Love, and several others - thanks so much for helping today. Such a relief to get these in the ground!
We have been busy here at the farm! Pruning blackberries, tying up blackberries, tilling up ground for planting new strawberries and peaches, and enjoying the beautiful peach blooms! The season seems to be a good week behind schedule which will make our asparagus and strawberry crops later as well. Today we are focusing on the asparagus- which I’ll post about taking orders soon!
We routinely till our asparagus ground (very shallow) in the spring for a couple reasons. First, it smooths the ground out to make it easier to walk during picking. Second, it breaks up the old stalks from last year so we don’t jab our
hands on them - which is quite painful! The downside to this is it does delay harvest by a week or so - especially with these cooler temps. Sooo it’s quite possible that home gardeners will see theirs “pop up” before ours. Never fear though - we will have an plenty when it gets started. Our asparagus harvest usually lasts through Memorial Day. And now you know! Watch for our next post about taking orders
