Some men watch the sunset.
Some men chase horizons.
And some stand beneath a storm of sparks, staring into the heavens as if daring the sun itself to blink first.
Today's project may not have gone entirely according to plan, but neither do legends.

🌿 THISTLE FIRE™ TALKS: ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY & YOUR ANIMALS ...because we actually care.

We make botanical products. We also have a 90-lb dog named Fred, and three cats who run this homestead with zero accountability. So trust us when we say: we take this seriously, and you should too.

Here's what every pet owner using essential oil-based products, ours or anyone else's, needs to understand:

🐱 CATS ARE IN A CATEGORY OF THEIR OWN.
Cats are missing a liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) that most mammals use to break down the compounds in essential oils. This means their bodies literally cannot process them out. Exposure builds up. The result can be liver toxicity and failure, and it doesn't always take much.

Oils that are dangerous to cats include... but are not limited to:
❌ Tea tree
❌ Lemongrass
❌ Lavender
❌ Eucalyptus
❌ Peppermint
❌ Clove
❌ Cinnamon
❌ Citrus oils
❌ Pine

Exposure isn't just direct contact. Diffusing in an enclosed space, residue on surfaces they walk across, or contact with your skin after you've applied a product... all of it counts. They groom. They absorb. It adds up.

🐕 DOGS ARE MORE RESILIENT, BUT NOT INVINCIBLE.
FERAL WARD™, our personal and dog-safe insect repellent, does NOT contain tea tree oil, which can cause neurological issues in dogs even in small amounts. We formulated it that way deliberately. But even dog-safe formulas should not be applied near eyes, nose, or mouth, and you should always let any product dry fully before your dog is handled or comes inside.

🌲 HOW WE HANDLE IT AT THISTLEWYRD™:
We spray IRON WARD™ around our yard perimeter. Our cats do go into the woods... they're feral little woodland gremlins, it's their whole thing... but by the time any surface is dry, the volatile compounds have largely dissipated. We do not spray where our animals will have wet contact with treated surfaces. Ever.

AND NOW THE THING NOBODY THINKS ABOUT:
Does your dog lick you? Does your cat sleep on your chest or knead your arms? Do you apply products inside your home?

Your body is a vector. If you spray something on yourself and your cat snuggles up ten minutes later, they are being exposed. If you spritz something in your living room and your dog pads through it and licks his paws... exposure. If you diffuse oils in a small space with a cat who can't leave... exposure. This is not fear-mongering. This is just paying attention.

We make products we use on ourselves and our own animals. That means we have thought through every single ingredient and every scenario. That's the Thistle Fire™ difference.. they are small batch, Iron Range made, and actually thought through.
Questions about our formulas or ingredients? Ask us. Always.

WOOD TICK CHRONICLES — UPDATE
We have made contact.
In an attempt to stop the dire tick, various defensive measures were deployed, including a pitchfork, warning marker, jack stand, hay fork, crate, and several other highly scientific deterrents.
The tick remained unimpressed.

I am all into DIY projects I'm not an expert. I'm not a professional. I don't even fully know what I'm doing.
But I've got a project, a willingness to learn, and just enough confidence to be dangerous.
Let's see how this turns out.

There is a big storm on the horizon.
3 days they predict. 🌩⛈️

We have the greenhouse packed with some of our outdoor stuff because rain plus the type of wind we get??? Our stuff will end up in the next county over.

Late office day for me, Gunnar will be busy pulling bins for our vintage shop and I need to order some cameras so we can keep the honest people... well honest.

Any suggestions on something super simple for camera monitoring? We will have wifi there and electric.

Gunnar has a shlew of vintage and antique toys going into a large case with an open front so we want to make sure we can monitor that.

Let me know what you use in the comments below 👇

Walk with me to our Annabellas Antiques Mall booth!!! We are the big number 73!

Why 73?? It is my year of birth. A lucky number.
Annabellas is a fun little spot with an awesome bunch of vendors and small business owners.

We will be setting up our booth 73 at the end of this month and we are SO excited about it!

132 sq ft of Gone Feral FindsTM and Thistle FireTM all in the sweet little famous town of Bovey!

Why is Bovey famous? Ever seen the painting 'Grace' by Enstrom. Well it wasn't a painting at all! Well not at first.... There is an amazing story behind it that can be found here ... https://www.mnhs.org/mnopedia/search/index/thing/grace-minnesota-state-photograph

So much history in one small space and we are honored to be a part of it.

Thanks for your support and encouragement!

Try to convince me that is not Gunnar as a GIJoe ... 🤪😜

We are up and about today, already watered the garden, did some trench digging, a few chores, had morning coffee, and now planning our day.

I may have Gunnar head out on a mission for some thrift finds I saw like window flower/herb beds. That would be amazing right?

What do you feral folks have planned for the day???

These old skis belonged to my grandfather, Herman. They sat for years up in the rafters of his basement in Cambridge, quietly waiting through the decades or perhaps centuries.

Time has worn them, but the story is still there in the wood.

Today I’m starting the restoration —

Field Test Log #4
The tick has been introduced to “Thistlefire” — Gypsy’s homemade DIY tick repellent.
Interesting results so far: The subject avoids treated areas, hesitates to climb, and in some cases drops off entirely.
The war against the woodland menace continues.
