🌿 THISTLE FIRE™ TALKS: ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY & YOUR ANIMALS ...because we actually care.
We make botanical products. We also have a 90-lb dog named Fred, and three cats who run this homestead with zero accountability. So trust us when we say: we take this seriously, and you should too.
Here's what every pet owner using essential oil-based products, ours or anyone else's, needs to understand:
🐱 CATS ARE IN A CATEGORY OF THEIR OWN.
Cats are missing a liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) that most mammals use to break down the compounds in essential oils. This means their bodies literally cannot process them out. Exposure builds up. The result can be liver toxicity and failure, and it doesn't always take much.
Oils that are dangerous to cats include... but are not limited to:
❌ Tea tree
❌ Lemongrass
❌ Lavender
❌ Eucalyptus
❌ Peppermint
❌ Clove
❌ Cinnamon
❌ Citrus oils
❌ Pine
Exposure isn't just direct contact. Diffusing in an enclosed space, residue on surfaces they walk across, or contact with your skin after you've applied a product... all of it counts. They groom. They absorb. It adds up.
🐕 DOGS ARE MORE RESILIENT, BUT NOT INVINCIBLE.
FERAL WARD™, our personal and dog-safe insect repellent, does NOT contain tea tree oil, which can cause neurological issues in dogs even in small amounts. We formulated it that way deliberately. But even dog-safe formulas should not be applied near eyes, nose, or mouth, and you should always let any product dry fully before your dog is handled or comes inside.
🌲 HOW WE HANDLE IT AT THISTLEWYRD™:
We spray IRON WARD™ around our yard perimeter. Our cats do go into the woods... they're feral little woodland gremlins, it's their whole thing... but by the time any surface is dry, the volatile compounds have largely dissipated. We do not spray where our animals will have wet contact with treated surfaces. Ever.
AND NOW THE THING NOBODY THINKS ABOUT:
Does your dog lick you? Does your cat sleep on your chest or knead your arms? Do you apply products inside your home?
Your body is a vector. If you spray something on yourself and your cat snuggles up ten minutes later, they are being exposed. If you spritz something in your living room and your dog pads through it and licks his paws... exposure. If you diffuse oils in a small space with a cat who can't leave... exposure. This is not fear-mongering. This is just paying attention.
We make products we use on ourselves and our own animals. That means we have thought through every single ingredient and every scenario. That's the Thistle Fire™ difference.. they are small batch, Iron Range made, and actually thought through.
Questions about our formulas or ingredients? Ask us. Always.
