Yesterday, while getting ready to come camping, I twisted the wrong way and popped a rib head out in my back. A quick trip to urgent care, we later made it to Mohican Wilderness—unfortunately the muscle spasms are still very much here. 😡
So this morning, I’m being forced to do something I’m not particularly good at when we camp.
Sit.
All morning I’ve had my bare feet on the Earth. River flowing in front of me…….. And then this beautiful swallowtail butterfly landed about a foot from my feet and stayed for almost three minutes.
I knew there was a message in her visit.
We think of butterflies as symbols of transformation, movement and becoming. But a butterfly doesn’t fight its way through every stage. Sometimes its entire job is simply to be still while change happens.
Apparently, that’s my job today too. Instead of flitting around the campground, I’m getting to know this one little piece of land. The river. The trees. The light. Everything moving around me while I remain still.
Maybe there’s something sacred about that too.
Sometimes transformation looks like spreading your wings. And sometimes it looks like sitting beside the river long enough for a butterfly to remind you that even something with wings knows when it’s time to be still. 🦋
