Which one is your favorite? I’m a sucker for the coneflower and the bee balm. 🌷🌻🌸

Fireflies. Those little glowing bugs that somehow make you feel like you’re standing outside as a kid again, waiting for one to blink through the yard.

And if it feels like you don’t see them as much as you used to, you’re not imagining it. In many places, fireflies have been affected by habitat loss, pesticides, bright outdoor lights, short lawns, and fewer natural spaces where they can complete their life cycle.

So what kind of spaces do fireflies actually like?

They’re drawn to darker areas with moisture, plants, leaf litter, taller grasses, ferns, groundcovers, and quiet spots where they can rest, hide, mate, and lay eggs. Their larvae spend time down in the soil and leaf litter, feeding on things like slugs, snails, and other soft-bodied insects.

A few plants and habitat helpers that can make your space more firefly-friendly:

• Goldenrod
• Asters
• Coneflower
• Bee balm
• Wild bergamot
• Coreopsis
• Evening primrose
• Creeping thyme
• Native grasses
• Ferns
• Leaf litter
• Damp areas
• Less outdoor lighting
• Undisturbed outdoor areas

They’re still out there, but they’re more likely to show up where the yard gives them what they need.

Plant the flowers, leave some leaves, turn down the extra lights, and let a few outdoor spaces stay a little more natural. Fireflies don’t need everything perfectly tidy. They need a place that still gives them somewhere to live.

It’s official! 🍋🍋🍋

We will be joining the festivities at Fireflies on the Fairway on June 13th! 💫 It will be at the Hillsboro Country Club and is open to the public for free!

Come view the rare species of Fireflies during their special evening and enjoy the festivities with us as we serve yummy glowing lemonade and enjoy the firefly celebration!

Not all of it is fireflies. And not all fireflies flash.

Most people see the yellow-green pulse over the lawn and assume one species. Bioluminescence in the eastern US comes from at least six different sources — and some of them aren't insects at all.

🌿 Three you've probably never noticed:

Foxfire fungus — the green glow on rotting logs. Nobody has confirmed why it glows.

Railroad worm — produces red and green light from the same body simultaneously. No other known land animal does this.

Blue ghost firefly — no flash at all. Males drift low over Appalachian forest floors emitting a continuous ghostly glow.

🐾 The one most people miss:

The common firefly larva has been underground for up to two years, hunting slugs in the dark, glowing faintly the entire time. The adult flash everyone watches is the final chapter of a life mostly spent glowing where nobody could see it.

Firefly season starts this month. On a warm night after rain, count the different patterns. Most yards have more than one species talking past each other in the dark 🌿

June is the loudest insect month of the year. Here's what's active right now and what's coming in the next few weeks.

Already here and peaking: bumble bees on every flower, hoverflies mimicking bees while eating aphids, lady beetles patrolling the garden, tiger swallowtails working the butterfly bush. Paper wasp nests are growing under every eave.

🌿 Emerging this month:

- Fireflies — first flashes at dusk, building through June into peak season
- June beetles — at the porch light after three years underground
- Japanese beetles — metallic green on the roses by mid-June. Hand-pick before 9 AM.
- Luna moths — pale green, no mouth, roughly a week to live. Look for them on screen doors after dark.
- Annual cicadas — the continuous daytime buzz starts mid-to-late June and runs through August
- Monarch generation two — laying eggs on milkweed right now

June sounds different than May. The bird chorus tapers. The insect chorus takes over 🐾
