Hilo,
On Wednesday July 29th, we unfortunately had a mailman driving a mail truck from USPS Hilo hit the cones and pallets in front of the shack, which caused the shack to fall off of its foundation into our rock wall and fence. The worker driving the mail truck left no notice of the damage, didn’t make a report to their superiors. Instead, they picked up the knocked over cones, put the pallets back where they thought they belonged and continued on with their day.
Because of the lack of communication from the driver, we were forced to take matters into our own hands. After calling the USPS Hilo office multiple times over the past two days, we have had no answer. Even with the new Postmaster assignment that happened 5 weeks ago at USPS Hilo, Kai Kawelo, has taken no action and shown no effort to get back to us in this pressing issue.
Here is our concern: If we hadn’t seen the footage on our cameras and went out to check the condition of the shack, it would’ve remained unbalanced and unstable. On Heahea street, we consistently have kids, elderly, and all people walking on the side of the road where the shack is located. Our most important concern is our communities safety, with the shack being left off its foundation, it could have fallen on a passerby and caused serious injury, which is the last thing we’d want. Luckily, papa was able to stabilize the shack and make the necessary fixes.
We ask that Hilo, as a community stay more mindful of the safety, respect, and dignity needed to keep us safe as a community, even small things like this can make a difference. We also ask that we make some noise for the attention of USPS Hilo, so that they can take the responsibility and accountability necessary that they owe to the shack and their community. We leave you with a message from Papa: “Just be honest, own up to your mistakes!”
Thank you, Hilo.
