Tonight, my husband and our son are somewhere off the South Carolina coast.

This is what their night looks like.

Thunder. Lightning. Rough weather. And a job that still has to be done.

Commercial sh*****ng has never been an easy way to make a living. But right now, the men and women who are trying to keep this industry alive are facing something that feels almost impossible.

Diesel prices are crippling our boats. Shrimp prices are painfully low. Cheap foreign imports continue to flood our market. And the cost of everything it takes to keep our boats running keeps climbing.

Then there are nights like tonight — when the people we love are out there working in weather most of us would never willingly step into.

These aren’t just boats. They are family businesses. They are jobs. They are generations of knowledge and experience. They are part of the history and culture of the South East.

We aren’t asking for sympathy.

We’re asking people to pay attention.

Because once America’s commercial sh*****ng industry is gone, we don’t get it back.

Please support your local fishermen. Ask where your shrimp comes from. Buy wild-caught American shrimp whenever you can.

And tonight, say a little prayer for the crews working underneath that lightning.

Only From Our Waters: A New Standard in Coastal Dining

The Beaufort Area Hospitality Association is proud to introduce Only From Our Waters, a regional initiative designed to celebrate, protect, and promote the use of local and American wild-caught shrimp.

This program invites restaurants and hospitality businesses to take a stand for authenticity, transparency, and the preservation of our coastal heritage. By committing to serve local and/or American wild-caught shrimp, participating businesses will help set a new standard for our region, one that both residents and visitors can trust.

In partnership with the USCB Department of Natural Sciences, we have developed a credible, science-based testing protocol that will randomly verify shrimp sourcing. This ensures integrity across the program and builds confidence for consumers seeking a genuine Lowcountry dining experience.

Beyond the plate, Only From Our Waters is about impact. Our local sh*****ng industry has faced significant challenges, losing critical infrastructure and market share to imported products. This initiative directly supports American shrimpers and strengthens the economic and cultural fabric of our coastal communities.

Participating businesses will receive an official Only From Our Waters decal to display proudly at their establishment, signaling their commitment to quality, transparency, and local support. In addition, partners will be featured in a robust marketing campaign, including regional press, billboard placements, and promotion through the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

This is more than a program, it’s a movement to preserve what makes our region and the coastlines of America special.

Join us. Serve with purpose. Serve with Pride.
