It's been a few weeks, and a lot happened while the garden kept growing. Here's your Weekly Ag Briefโ€”most important first. One thread ties it together: the gap between what Washington SAYS about protecting farmers and clean food, and what the ledger actually shows.

๐Ÿฅฉ FOREIGN BEEF: Trump moved to bring in up to 300,000 metric tons of tariff-free foreign beef to lower pricesโ€”after already quadrupling Argentine imports in February. Ranchers (and even Republican senators) are furious, because cheap imports undercut the very prices producers need to rebuild the herd. Know your rancher. Buy direct.

๐Ÿชฐ SCREWWORM: The cattle border reopens TOMORROW, Aug. 24 (coincidence?)โ€”even after Mexico's Sonora state confirmed its first case days earlier. 44 U.S. cases and climbing. Keep checking your animals.

๐Ÿฅฌ LETTUCE UPDATE: The imported-iceberg parasite outbreak became one of the largest on recordโ€”10,930 sick, 17 states, 2 deaths. Industrial lettuce from Mexico. Your garden greens were never in it.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ FARM BILL: Collapsed in committee Aug. 6 over a SNAP fight. Back to the drawing board in September.

โœ… TWO WINS: A court ordered USDA to close the GMO-labeling loopholes (no more hiding GMOs in oils & sodas, no more QR-code-only labels). And MAHA moved to close the food-additive "GRAS loophole."

โš–๏ธ BUT THE LEDGER CUTS BOTH WAYS: glyphosate got a liability shield, and the EPA eased scrutiny of "forever chemicals" in the sludge spread on farmland (comment window closes Sept. 4).

Appalachian Power had the nerve to call today to inform us that helicopters would be trimming trees around power lines on the 21st. ๐Ÿ˜ก Too bad they didn't have decency to call before yesterday when they sent crews to indiscriminately pour glyphosate all over the fields surrounding our farm where our neighbors cattle live and children play. They sprayed near power lines, other places that were nowhere near power lines and so close to waterways that you have to wonder... what exactly are the laws pertaining to the use of chemical sprays... ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿ˜ก The world we live in made me so furious today that I was shaking...

I came home to find a full crew of eight or more men with large backpacks spraying glyphosate down the neighbors' fence line, inside and outside of the field where their cattle are. As I came over the ridge, I found a crew literally seconds away from spraying my front and side fence lines. They were also trying to get through my gate to spray inside the field where my cows currently are.

I feel so much anger toward the kind of evil monsters who would green-light programs like this that ruin the world we all rely on for survival. I feel it every time I pass a yard or a farm and see the dead grass along fence lines and beneath the underbrush. The type of person who would use this stuff is not the type of person I want loose in this world or anywhere near my home or my family. I feel sadness for the extreme ignorance and disregard for human life and for the planet.

We must do better. As a society, we must start caring more about our children and their children.
