Broccoli Sprouts – Another Way to Increase Your Intake of Glucoraphanin

Small quantities of fresh broccoli sprouts actually contain as much cancer protection as larger amounts of the mature vegetable.

According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University. Just 5 grams (0.17 ounces) of sprouts contain concentrations of the compound glucoraphanin equal to that found in 150 grams (5.2 ounces) of mature broccoli.

In fact, their research showed that 3-day-old sprouts of both broccoli and cauliflower may contain anywhere from 10 to 100 times higher levels of glucoraphanin than the corresponding mature plants!2

So if you're looking for an inexpensive superfood, sprouts are it. An article published last year listed 10 reasons for eating sprouts, including the following:

Sprouts can contain up to 100 times more enzymes than raw fruits and vegetables, allowing your body to extract more vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fats from the foods you eat
Both the quality of the protein and the fiber content of beans, nuts, seeds and grains improves when sprouted
The content of vitamins and essential fatty acids also increase dramatically during the sprouting process. For example, depending on the sprout, the nutrient content can increase as much as 30 times the original value within just a few days of sprouting. Sunflower seed and pea sprouts tend to top the list of all the seeds that you can sprout and are typically each about 30 times more nutritious than organic vegetables you can even harvest in your backyard garden
During sprouting, minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, bind to protein, making them more bioavailable
Sprouts are the ultimate locally grown food, and can easily be grown in your own kitchen, so you know exactly what you're eating. And since they're very inexpensive, cost is no excuse for avoiding them

7 Benefits of Quinoa: The Supergrain of the Future

Go Natural, Go Healthy......Go Organic!!!!

1. Quinoa is one of the most protein-rich foods we can eat. It is a complete protein containing all nine essential amino acids.

2. Quinoa contains almost twice as much fiber as most other grains. Fiber is most widely known to relieve constipation. It also helps to prevent heart disease by reducing high blood pressure and diabetes. Fiber lowers cholesterol and glucose levels, may lower your risk of developing hemorrhoids and may help you to lose weight as it takes a longer time to chew than does other foods because it makes you feel fuller for longer and is less “energy dense” which means it has fewer calories for the same volume of food.

3. Quinoa contains Iron. Iron helps keep our red blood cells healthy and is the basis of hemoglobin formation. Iron carries oxygen from one cell to another and supplies oxygen to our muscles to aid in their contraction. Iron also increases brain function because the brain takes in about 20% of our blood oxygen. There are many benefits of iron some more of which include neurotransmitter synthesis, regulation of body temperature, aids enzyme activity and energy metabolism.

4. Quinoa contains lysine. Lysine is mainly essential for tissue growth and repair.

5. Quinoa is rich in magnesium. Magnesium helps to relax blood vessels and thereby to alleviate migraines. Magnesium also may reduce Type 2 diabetes by promoting healthy blood sugar control. Other health benefits of magnesium include transmission of nerve impulses, body temperature regulation, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth.

6. Quinoa is high in Riboflavin (B2). B2 improves energy metabolism within brain and muscle cells and is known to help create proper energy production in cells.

7. Quinoa has a high content of manganese. Manganese is an antioxidant, which helps to prevent damage of mitochondria during energy production as well as to protect red blood cells and other cells from injury by free radicals.

BENEFITS OF ORGANIC OLIVE OIL

Organic olive oil is seen as the pinnacle of oils when it comes to nutritional benefits, and for a number of good reasons. Olive oil has been used for cooking in Mediterranean countries for centuries, and over time its popularity has spread across the globe. The oil itself can offer a host of health benefits in a number of areas, and choosing organic will ensure that you are getting the best out of the oil without the addition of unnatural additives.

Organic

Organic olive oil is frequently "cold pressed," which means that the actual process of extracting the oil from the olives themselves is carried out by squashing them between two large stone rollers. This is a more effective way to separate the oil and keep the process as natural as possible without the use of machines.

As organic olives are grown without the use of additives, they tend to have a much richer taste and color that makes them stand out over their non-organic counterparts. The "first pressed" types of organic olive oils, such as extra virgin, are usually also the more expensive to buy as they undergo the least amount of processing.

High in Monounsaturated Fat

This is known as the "good" fat that the body needs in order to function properly. And most people who live in countries that incorporate olive oil into their diets on a regular basis can stand testament to the benefits it provides. Monounsaturated fat is great for the heart and cardiovascular system as a whole, and can help to reduce the chances of heart attacks and strokes. It does this by lowering the levels of "bad" LDL cholesterol, while raising the "good" HDL levels at the same time.

Good For Digestion

Olive oil has been shown to be of particular benefit to those who suffer from stomach ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders. As the oil is a much more effective and natural inducer of pancreatic hormones and bile in the body, it can help prevent the formation of gallstones.

The way the fatty acids are structured in organic olive oil is similar to that of the human body, which makes it very easy to digest. In fact, a spoonful of extra virgin olive oil is often given as a digestive aid in countries like Spain and Italy where the olives are indigenous.

Top 6 Superfoods to boost your energy!

Superfoods are just that – super foods! Although there are few dictionaries that define the word, the commonly understood definition of a superfood is a food that packs a big nutritional punch – a whole food that contains a high concentration of nutrients.

Superfoods work in synergy with your body systems, promoting normal cell function and preventing mutations at a cellular level, boosting your immune system and preventing chronic diseases. So yep, they’re pretty super!

What’s more, they support weight loss, help you keep the weight off, support your gut health and digestion, boost your immunity, balance potential nutritional deficiencies, and promote wellness! In order to reap all of their benefits, try to include them in your diet daily.

Here’s a list of my top 6 superfoods that regulate blood sugar levels, reduce sugar cravings and boost your energy. (I tried to limit myself to 5 Superfoods, but it was just too hard!)

My Top 6 Superfoods:

1. Oily Fish – Salmon, Tuna, Mackerel, Herring, Sardines

Oily fish are high in protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, including Omega 3. These fish:

Support healthy hormones- aid fertility and pregnancy
Aid with fat loss
Promote wound healing and skin integrity
Aim for 3 servings of oily fish per week

2. Garlic

Did you know that garlic is one of nature’s natural antibiotics? It:

Boosts your immune system
Reduces cold and flu symptoms
Contains anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic properties
Aim for 1-2 garlic cloves per day

3. Green, Leafy Veggies – Kale, Spinach, Collard, Mustard, and Turnip Greens, Swiss Chard, Rocket, Broccoli

These contain potent anti-oxidants that reduce cell destruction and prevent disease, not to mention they offer great anti-ageing benefits! Furthermore they:

Support liver health and detoxification processes
Alkalise your body, helping to prevent disease
Reduce inflammation and pain, especially in muscles and joints
Aim for one salad a day, and add green leafy vegetables to any stir-fry, soup or smoothie.

4. Blueberries

Blueberries contain anthocyanins, a naturally occurring pigment that gives them their blue colour, which is a potent antioxidant. They’ll help to:

Balance hormone levels
Promote healthy skin
Support weight loss and weight management
Aim to eat a handful a day – fresh or frozen.

5. Cacao Beans – Raw, Unprocessed Chocolate

Cacao beans contain the greatest wholefood source of magnesium, which:

Supports concentration and memory by increasing blood flow to the brain
Regulates blood sugar levels
Supports normal muscle function, including your heart – after all your heart is one big muscle!

6. Spirulina – Blue Green Algae (dried and available in powdered or capsule form)

Spirulina offers the greatest source of protein on this planet, even more than any meat can offer. Protein is ideal for:

Boosting energy and cellular health
Regulating appetite
Protecting your liver from damage caused by heavy metals
You can add 1-2 teaspoons of spirulina into a smoothie or take it as a supplement. See the recipe below for an example.

Foods That Are GMO

It’s really awesome to see a growing concern over genetically modified foods. People seem to be waking up to this issue. They don’t want genetically modified foods in their diets. And for good reason!

Are GMOs Safe?

While many studies claim no correlation to any health issues with GMO consumption, there are a number of studies that do show frightening correlations including multi-organ damage and reproductive disruption. The serious health risks are becoming harder to dismiss.

How to Avoid GMOs

It’s not easy. It is estimated that 60 to 70 percent of processed food contains a GMO ingredient, according to the Colorado State University Extension.

As for produce, buying organic is one very good way to avoid GMOs. There are times when organic crops have been contaminated, but for the most part, buying organic keeps you free of genetically modified foods. We prefer to purchase most of our food from local farmer’s markets where we can get to know the farmers. Besides growing it yourself, local farmer’s markets are typically the best way to get the freshest, healthiest produce. And buy heirloom produce as much as possible! It’s funny looking, but much healthier and much tastier! Read The Difference Between Heirlooms, Hybrids, and GMOs for more information on heirlooms.

Another way to avoid GMOs is to avoid the foods that are most often genetically modified.

What Foods are Genetically Modified?

Corn, soybeans, cotton (for oil), canola (also a source of oil), squash, papaya, and sugar beets, which are refined into sugar. There’s also GMO alfalfa, but that is used for animal feed, not for sprouts that people eat. That leaves quite a lot of your garden untouched.

Maqui Berry: The Newest Superfruit

Today, practically everyone knows that blueberries, blackberries, black currants, acai, raspberries and elderberries are very good for health. But few have heard of one of the greatest super berries of them all, maqui berry. Recently I traveled to the southern part of Chile, in the Patagonia region, where I experienced maqui berry, the Mapuche native people who harvest the berry, and the majestic Patagonia region where maqui grows profusely in the wild.

Here is what is known so far:

Maqui berries are very rich in anthocyanins, which are purple pigments with very high antioxidant activity. Specifically, maqui berries contain high levels of anthocyanins called delphinidins, which is also found in violas, delphiniums, and Concord grapes. But in maqui berry, these compounds are found in unusually high amounts. The delphinidins demonstrate potent anti-inflammatory activity, so they help to reduce the risk of a variety of degenerative diseases that involve inflammation. These pigments also inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells.

Inflammation is part of virtually every degenerative disease, from cardiovascular disease to diabetes to arthritis. Any illness that ends with “itis” is an inflammatory disease. The anthocyanins exhibit powerful anti-inflammatory activity, and do it as well as drugs for the same purposes, without negative effects.

The antioxidant compounds in maqui berry help to prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the blood. Oxidation of cholesterol is a factor in the development of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, stroke and hardening of the arteries. Regular daily intake of maqui berries or the berry juice is a smart investment in better cardiovascular health.
Interestingly, intake of maqui berries or their juice causes a significant increase of insulin in the body. In fact, maqui appears to do this better than any other known plant. What does this mean? Consuming maqui berries or their juice with or after meals can help to suppress blood glucose, thereby evening out energy and preventing the formation of new fat cells. As a result, maqui may prove to be a beneficial aid in weight control.

H**p Seeds? Yes H**p Seeds!!

H**p seeds come from the same h**p plant renowned for its durable fiber. The seeds of the plant are edible (known as h**p seeds, or h**p nuts) and are used in a growing number of products today. Though h**p comes from a variety of Cannabis, the plant contains extremely low levels (or none at all) of THC, which is considered a drug in most countries. A similar situation would be the amount of o***m found in poppy seeds. It is not possible to use industrial h**p as a drug. The plant is known for being extremely easy to cultivate, with fantastic yields. The h**p plant, even for culinary purposes, is still illegal to grow in the United States. Most organic h**p seeds found on the market in the U.S. are grown in Canada.

Nutritional Benefits of H**p Seed

H**p is considered one of the world's most nutritious plants. H**p seeds contain all of the essential amino acids making them an ideal source of protein for vegans and raw foodists. The essential fatty acids are abundant in h**p seeds and come in a ratio that is highly beneficial to humans. Magnesium, iron, and potassium are in good supply along with fiber. Some of h**p seed's supply of antioxidants comes from its vitamin E content.
