This one hurts 💔,
Between C-sections and seizures this kidding season has been HARD. But this loss way by far the most challenging.
Early Wednesday morning, Ober-Boerd Dawnstar kidded naturally and easily with 2 does and 1 buck, the first does we have ever gotten out of her. Dawnstar herself looked great, she was responsive, eating, drinking, and even had an impressive udder coming in.
However, due to bit of retained placenta we lost Dawnstar Thursday afternoon. Noticing she was still dripping significantly by Wednesday night we called the vet who performed a uterine flush and administered antibiotics Thursday morning. Unfortunately nature had other plans, and Dawnstar could not win the battle inside of her body.
Dawny was a staple in the barn, even though she was quiet and never demanded much. She was never loud or a fighter. But a sweetheart who loved chin scratches and hoof rubs. The tuft of hair on her poll constantly stood straight up from all the head scratches.
She was my showmanship doe for many years, and a darn good one at that. I could always count on her to tolerate hours of clipping and scrubbing on tue stand, and never complain. In the ring she was relaxed and cooperative, peacefully chewing her cud, even through a 2 hour long National showmanship class. She also held her own in the breed classes, achieving 2/3 legs needed for a champion title. This was supposed to be her year.
The barn definitely seems emptier without you in it Dawny. Your daughters will carry on your name and influence in our herd.
