During the winter time there’s not much farming going on so we run cattle on wheat pasture and corn stalk circles. When we get cattle in the first thing we do is “work them”. This includes giving them shots, ear tags, and brands.
Contrary to the rhetoric that’s been pushed by people who have no idea what they’re talking about, farmers and ranchers do not just pump livestock full of drugs and hormones. What usually happens is the producer (rancher or farmer) will give the livestock an initial round of vaccinations. Think of it like vaccinating your child for small pox or polio with most of the vaccinations being subcutaneously aka under the skin. For this picture taking a needle and just pushing it under the top layer of skin. No medicine is injected into the meat or muscle. The majority of the medicine will be flushed out of their system within in 30 days the same way that our bodies flush out medicine.
Next is the ear tag. We basically pierce their ear except for a diamond stud to wear they get a tag with our name and number on them in case they wander off someone can call us to come get them.
Then we have the brand. Ear tags can fall out or be cut out but it’s very hard to cover up a brand. Brands are necessary because that identities the operation the livestock belongs too. People unfortunately do steal livestock and a brand is one way to immediately identify a stole calf at a sale. It also helps the producers pick out their livestock quickly if they get mixed up with someone else’s. For simple terms a brand is a calf’s tattoo that identifies them.
Hopefully you learned some today and hope you had a very happy thanksgiving.
