Hawks Nest Calf Ranch

Hawks Nest Calf Ranch Hawks Nest Calf Ranch is owned and operated by Craig and Kerry Tucker by Hopkins, Michigan.. All are castrated, dehorned and vaccinated with a 5-way vaccine.

We raise Holstein feeder steers and sell between 350 and 400 pounds average. We do not implant the steers for rapid growth. We are also venturing into further 4-H projects with the addition of our daughter's sheep project for the Allegan County Fair.

Congratulations to our son Caleb. We just found out that he is the Michigan FFA state award winner in the beef placement proficiency area! This is based on hours and money earned from his work on our farm. After one of our employees quit last year (so that he could attend college full time), Caleb took over those hours (and more). In the midst of a salmonella outbreak, he was instrumental in implementing a new sanitizing routine. Caleb is also our lead machinery maintenance and repair person using skills he is learning in the diesel mechanics program at our local school tech center. His application will now be forwarded to the national competition. Way to go Caleb!!

A lot of people have seen the news reports of JBS, Smithfield, and other livestock processing plants closing due to workers contracting the coronavirus. As a beef producer, please know that your meat is not contaminated with the virus and the meat is still safe to eat. Your food supply is safe! Just because the workers may be sick, which is very unfortunate, it does not mean you will get the virus by eating beef (or pork in the case of Smithfield) that has been processed from these plants. The coronavirus does not spread this way. What it will mean for you, as a consumer, is a hiccup in the distribution of these meat products. Because these plants are closing, it means there is no processing of animals at this time. Which means a supply problem to the grocery stores. Which means a shortage of product on the store shelves. This does not mean a shortage of meat - it is quite the opposite. As a producer, this is a bad situation for us. As long as the processing plants are closed, there is no market for our livestock and we can't sell our market-ready livestock. This is the perfect time for you as a consumer to make that contact with your local producer. The local producer can help you with an excellent quality product - no distribution issues and know you are helping your local neighbor. Rest assured, even in this time of trial, we are working hard to make a safe, quality product for your family.

It's been a while since we last posted. Our kids are home from school, and we are taking advantage of that. They have spent a lot of time outside, cleaning barns and doing misc things we never seem to have time to do otherwise. Our family is healthy, and we pray all of you are too!
