Usually, people are quick to assume that weight loss should be praised while weight gain should be looked down upon.

It is time to put these assumptions to rest.

Weight loss does not equate to a health gain and weight gain does not mean something negative has occurred.

You never really know what someone may be going through or dealing with. Commenting on their body may do a lot more harm than you realize. Even if you think the comments are positive, the person receiving them might not feel the same way.

Overall, it is unnecessary to share your opinion on someone else's body and it really is none of your business.

Usually, people are quick to assume that weight loss should be praised while weight gain should be looked down upon.

It is time to put these assumptions to rest.

Weight loss does not equate to a health gain and weight gain does not mean something negative has occurred.

You never really know what someone may be going through or dealing with. Commenting on their body may do a lot more harm than you realize. Even if you think the comments are positive, the person receiving them might not feel the same way.

Please be extremely careful with how you approach loved ones and their eating habits. Many times we have good intentions but it may be brought up in ways that can negatively impact others.

If you want to instill good habits in your children, the best practices have shown to be modeling and starting these habits at a young age (PMID: 29604319)

Teaching children good and bad foods may only set them up for a life long struggle with diet culture. Focus on what TO DO instead. Like practicing portion control, healthy coping habits, and the importance of physical activity.

Be wary of profiles that use professional credentials to speak on subjects they do not specialize in.

So many people are misguided by these profiles which go to such extents as telling people to remove entire food groups from their diet. Or lead them to believe in “fat burning hacks.”

These profiles prey on a vulnerable population who are desperately trying to better their own health. In my opinion, that goes against what the health and wellness industry should be about.

Rate of weight loss can affect your long term progress. A safe recommendation is aiming to lose about 1% of your total body weight per week. Studies have found that a faster loss per week (very low calorie diets) is associated with higher rates of fat free mass loss which can be associated with weight regain (PMID: 26813524)

It’s great if you want to create new and better habits. It’s best to begin by slowly introducing new food options into your diet.

With fresh fruit and vegetables, this may be a little more difficult due to their short shelf life.

Start with buying frozen and canned products to keep these items within reach when you are feeling inspired. Overtime, these foods will become a part of your regular diet and you may be more inclined to buy fresh product.

Even if you aren’t, that’s fine. Frozen and canned products are just as nutritious, and even more so in some cases (PMID: 26184294 PMID: 25526594)

Don’t allow the myth that these products are of less quality stop you from consuming more fruits and vegetables on a regular basis.

Many people underestimate the amount of calories they are consuming. Whether it’s from snacks/drinks that are left out or due hard to understand nutrition labels,calories are typically under reported. (PMID: 17197273)

While tracking may seem time consuming and tedious, it should be used just like training wheels on a bicycle. Once you have learned how to appropriate serving sizes and real hunger signals, you don’t have to track your food intake.

Artificial sweeteners (NNS) are painted as harmful substances that cause illness & weight gain. Much of this comes from inaccurate claims & misinterpreting clinical studies. There are no clinical studies (using normal amounts of NNS & human subjects) that have shown negative effects of using NNS.
Many of the studies have shown a positive association between the use of NNS & weight loss/management. Especially in helping to reduce weight in those dealing with obesity & controlling an unrestricted diet ( PMID 4744961 PMID 32216045)

Theres also little evidence to support the claims that NNS change or harm the flora of the gut microbiome (PMID 7694690) People like to cite a study that was conducted using mice to justify their claims (PMID 28790923) NNS may act differently in mice similar to how common foods, like walnuts, are poisonous to mice.
There is also no conclusive research to suggest NNS may cause cancer or affect insulin sensitivity in humans. (PMID 29760482) A recent meta analysis (PMID 34401106) sought to review the claims of NNS being linked to cancer and found no association. Earlier studies had found that the use of NNS in mice may have been associated with various types of cancer. But many of these studies used extremely high & repetitive doses of NNS. One study had repeatedly forced mice to consume the equivalent of 17 diet sodas or 92 packets of NNS (PMID 29439389). It may be safe to assume consuming anything to this excess is going to have negative effects.

If you dont want to consume NNS for your own reasons, thats fine. But its important to understand that there is no definite evidence to support that they are harmful. Yet, there is definite evidence to suggest NNS can be beneficial tools in weight loss/management.

I love it when clients are able to talk to me about what they are including in their diet rather than talking about the foods they are avoiding.

It may be difficult to change your mindset about food after restrictive dieting, but focusing on your health, happiness, and sustainability of your lifestyle can lead you to positive changes.

Highly restricted diets have been associated with binge eating episodes and present a higher occurrence of weight regain (PMID: 29044551).

While it is possible to lose or maintain weight with a restricted dieting method, it’s best to establish a healthy mindset about food. We will always have our own food preferences, but we should never feel afraid to eat certain types of food.

There’s always a bad apple in the bunch.

I’ve always really hated the way people feel entitled to use their degree to speak on nutrition. So many people are spreading incorrect and harmful information. All while hiding behind a professional title.

Yes, there is a rise in cases of Non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adults and children. However, I doubt anyone diagnosed with this disease was the victim of fruit consumption.

Be aware of the accounts you follow and the information you’re consuming.

How are those resolutions

If you feel overwhelmed, you should know that everyone does at some point.

Sometimes the long journey ahead of us, seems to be much more than we can handle or that we anticipated. Don’t worry. All we need to do is take a step back and create a plan.

It’s easy for us to say, I want to do “this” this year. But without any kind of notion as to how we are going to achieve this, we might never get it done.

I like to think about mile markers. We might be on a 500 mile long drive, but every mile we make it through is a mile closer to home.

Take it day by day. Weight loss, muscle gain, and health in general is not something we can accomplish in a short period of time. And remember, your journey is unique compared to everyone else’s. It might take a little longer for some of us.

And that’s perfectly fine.
