Nicole’s Garden names Tania Kanga as its Director

December 14, 2020

Nicole’s Garden Foundation , a non- profit organization who’s mission is to change the way that people eat, grow, and attain their food by establishing urban and alternative micro farms in non-green spaces and further disease education since 2015, has announced the selection of Ms. Tania Kanga as its new Executive Director. “We are very pleased to announce this appointment as Nicole’s Garden focuses on projects for 2021 and Beyond” reported Dr. Noreen Khan-Mayberry, Founder of Nicole’s Garden & HealthFest Houston, the organization’s signature event. “Tania will bring leadership, creativity and commitment to the goals and the mission of Nicole’s Garden. In the past, Kanga has served as Vice President of Nicole’s Garden Board of Directors & Event Director for HealthFest Houston; and she has the breadth of experience and perspective that is needed to take Nicole’s Garden ahead.”

Tania’s experience includes several non-profit board/leadership positions and membership roles over her last 8 years in Houston. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State University in Microbiology and a minor in Zoology and works as National Sales and Marketing Manager for the Medscript Pharmacy group. Tania also has several years of experience working in the medical field. Tania expressed her passion for leading the organization, planning programs and forging partnerships, “I look forward to serving as Executive Director and fulfilling Nicole’s Garden’s vision,” remarks Tania. “I’m dedicated to this organization because I think there is a need for nutrition and disease awareness in our community as a whole. Nicole’s Garden continues to work towards global access to clean water and fresh food, along with proper disease education. One of my biggest focuses will be to provide chronic disease education for underserved and at risk communities and creating partnerships with organizations and community advocates aligned with our mission.”

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is an opportunity to honor our most outstanding volunteers and recognize the impact they make. Volunteers must complete qualifying volunteer hours and certifying organizations must follow program requirements.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) recognizes incredible individuals who are committed to a high level of volunteer and service. These individuals work tirelessly to help solve some of the toughest challenges facing their communities, and our nation.

2020 Honoree Blaine Ochoa!

Blaine Ochoa is the current Miss Houston USA 2019. She is also a published writer, actress, singer, and philanthropist. Her platform is international child aid and sponsorship, work which started on mission trips to the African continent.

She is the founder of the inspirational beauty and health blog, “Beauty With Blaine”. Beauty With Blaine has been seen in and on a variety of media outlets including TV, Print, and Radio. Beauty With Blaine has previously been a featured video segment for KHEA Radio 99.5 FM and column in LCA Houston Magazine. She is also working on launching a lipstick and beauty line in 2020.

Blaine has a Bachelors degree in Communication Studies from Texas State University, and is a professional in the media industry. She is a journalist and writer for Bay Area Houston Magazine.

A long-time supporter of Nicole’s Garden, Christina Zhou is the CEO, President, Founder of multiple investment companies in commercial properties, hospitality, import and wholesale business, including Pacific One Investment, JECK US Investment, Paramount First Investment, Quality Inn & Suites North Houston, JT International Trading, AA Economic and Trade Center and BabyMax Inc.

Originally from China, this savvy Houston businesswoman has received multiple degrees from her native country and the US. Christina has been a devoted advocate of women in business throughout her 20-year career. She has great experience and knowledge in international imports and exports, commercial real estate investment, develop and management.

Christina has always been a believer in giving back to the community. She supports and serves multiple boards as a Director or Advisor for charities and organizations! She has chaired and co-chaired many fundraising events, including Aspiration Foundation, KNOWAutism, Hot Mama International, Chinese Int’l Women Entrepreneur & Professional Association, Fort Bend Education Foundation, Asian Chamber of Commerce, Operation Smile, Miss Chinatown Houston, just to name a few.

Get to know our Chair:
Shawntell McWilliams is CEO of SM Global Consulting, a philanthropic branding, community relations, and event production company with the specific and unique focus of merging philanthropy with business. Her passion of both led her to begin this movement as a catalyst to enhance the Houston community and beyond.

Shawntell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Wiley College in Marshall, Texas; a Master of Science degree in Human Services Administration, with a concentration in Fund Development and Grant Writing from Louisiana State University and a post Master’s degree as an Education Specialist in Education Leadership. And she is currently pursuing a PhD in Education Leadership. Shawntell is certified in Corporate Etiquette and International Protocol from The Protocol School of Washington.

Shawntell works enthusiastically in support of various causes and has chaired over 20 fundraisers for laudable not-for-profit organizations raising millions of dollars. Shawntell has received numerous awards and recognition for her philanthropic work in the community and business arena.
