My heart was in my throat a few minutes ago when I experienced my first casting of one of my own horses.

Shania rolled in deep snow along the fence line and ended up casting herself. The fresh, soft snow compacted under her weight, and as she struggled to get up, she created a deep trench of snow on the non-fence side—right where she would normally roll to regain her footing. Instead, she was completely stuck.

Somehow, I was able to resolve it by myself.
What really struck me during this experience was how much she trusts me. As I moved her legs, dug snow out from beneath her, and encouraged her to flip to the other side, she stayed perfectly calm. I am honestly stunned that a nearly 3 year old, 1,000-lb flight animal didn’t panic or accidentally kick me in the process. That calm and that trust likely kept both of us safe.

This was absolutely terrifying. At any moment I thought she might panic and start flailing to get up, and that I would get hurt by accident. It was one of those moments that reminds you just how quickly things can go sideways, especially in winter.

If there’s a takeaway here, it’s this: deep snow near fence lines is no joke, and trust between horse and handler truly matters in emergencies.

And yes… I am SO done with this snow.

When your horse reviews the weather: ⭐☆☆☆☆

Sweeping the aisle and clearing my head.
There’s something grounding about small, repetitive tasks.
Any else find barn chores oddly calming?

Shania had her first dental float today and had her wolf teeth removed (an important step before starting under-saddle work.)

She’ll be heading to a trainer in two weeks, and this feels like one of those moments where you realize how fast they grow up.

Proud of this girl 💗
