There’s a difference between having bees and being a beekeeper. 🐝
Beekeeping isn’t just about harvesting honey or enjoying the sight of bees flying through the garden. It’s about stewardship.
One of the most important responsibilities we have is monitoring for Varroa mites- one of the biggest threats to honey bee colonies. We routinely test our hives to understand mite levels and treat when those levels reach thresholds that put the colony at risk.
The photo below shows a Varroa mite attached to developing drone brood. These tiny parasites feed on developing bees and spread viruses that can weaken or destroy an entire colony if left unmanaged.
Responsible beekeeping means making management decisions based on what the bees need, not just hoping they’ll be okay. Healthy bees don’t happen by accident—they happen because beekeepers pay attention, monitor, and intervene when necessary.
We’re proud to be beekeepers, not just ‘bee-havers’. Our goal is to help our colonies thrive today and make it through the winter strong enough to greet another spring! 🌸🌷
