Tried out Mexichido Bar and Grill off of Northpark Dr. in Kingwood today. First things first, the chips and salsa deserve top billing. Above average doesn’t quite do them justice. Fresh, warm chips paired with a salsa that actually has personality. Pro tip, ask for the secret green sauce. Think creamy avocado perfection that somehow convinces you to keep eating chips long after you said you were done. Honestly, we would come back just for the chips, salsa, and green sauce and consider it a win.

We started with the white queso and fried tortillas and wow. The queso was smooth, rich, and dangerously scoopable, while the fried tortillas were perfectly crisp and clearly designed to be the ultimate queso delivery system. No notes and totally forgot to take a picture of it. No leftovers, our bad!

For entrees, we ordered the street tacos on flour tortillas, always the right move, and Desy’s Burrito. That burrito was generously filled with tender carnitas, beans, onions, cilantro, and diced jalapeños. Every bite was packed with flavor and it is the kind of dish that makes you pause mid chew to appreciate your choices. So good.

The menu is huge in the best possible way, with an entire section dedicated to all things birria, which guarantees we will be back because there is no way to tackle that in one visit. The drink menu also looked fantastic, with plenty of options calling our name for next time.

The decor is bright, festive, and bursting with color, instantly setting a fun, celebratory vibe. Add in top notch service that was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, and you have a Tex Mex spot in Kingwood that truly delivers. We cannot wait to go back and try more of the menu.

There’s a new kid on the block, and its name is El Taqueo—a small-but-mighty Tijuana-style taco spot that somehow manages to feel both delightfully humble and suspiciously addictive. This spot is on Atascocita Rd right across from the food truck place.

Before you even order, they hit you with chicharrones. They were weirdly good, like someone finally figured out how to season air. They come with two sauces: a green one so hot it makes you reevaluate your life choices, and a red one that says, “Relax, I’m only semi-dangerous.”

My wife kicked things off with two flour-tortilla tacos one beef, one pork dressed in the classic quartet: onion, cilantro, lime, and guac. Everything tasted as fresh as if the toppings had been assembled by a small team of taco angels.

I, however, struck gold with the special charro beans. These smoky, slow cooked beauties with beef and white cheese were easily the star of the table. If the beans had a fan club, I’d be president.

But the show wasn’t over. I ordered the Doraqueso: four crispy corn tacos stuffed with cheese and seasoned pork. They didn’t just melt in your mouth, they practically signed a lease there.

We wrapped things up with nacho fries that were good… but could have been great if they swapped the stadium-level nacho cheese for authentic queso. (I like little league games, just not on my fries.)

Prices? Surprisingly solid. Food? Outstanding.

Downsides? Drinks come canned or bottled (except the aguas frescas), and they charge you a buck for a cup of ice.

Final verdict: We’re absolutely going back

Im always looking for a new spot on the way to visit Louisiana family and we found this one in Sulphur right next to Lake Charles. If you’ve ever wondered what culinary magic looks like when it hides out in a convenience store, Maplewood Burgers is your answer. Tucked between shelves of energy drinks and last-minute snacks is a burger joint that could teach “real” restaurants a thing or two about greatness.

We went big—convenience-store-food-but-make-it-gourmet big. The stuffed boudin burger was an absolute masterpiece: smoky, savory, and so good it should come with a warning label for emotional attachment. The onion rings were perfectly crisp, like they’d been preparing for greatness their whole lives, and the chorizo fries? Let’s just say they deserve their own national holiday. Even the kids’ chicken nuggets were suspiciously delicious—like Maplewood couldn’t help but overachieve.

Honestly, it might be one of the best burgers I’ve ever had, and I’m still recovering from the fact that it came from a convenience store. Maplewood Burgers is proof that sometimes the finest dining happens where you least expect it—right between the cold drinks and the scratch-offs.

Randie and I had an impromptu date night last night and we tried out a place called Letty’s Authentic Mexican Cocina. Last time we tried to eat here it was Mother’s Day and there was an hour wait. We see why now!!!! From the moment you walk into Letty’s Mexican Cocina, you can feel the care and thought that went into creating the space. The décor is warm, stylish, and inviting, striking the perfect balance between modern and traditional Mexican influences. The place is small and personal, and it sets the tone for a dining experience that feels both comfortable and elevated. The atmosphere is excellent—lively yet relaxed, making it an ideal spot for everything from casual dinners to special occasions.

We began with the salsa flight and homemade chips, and it was the perfect introduction. The chips were fresh, crisp, and clearly made in-house, while each salsa had its own personality—bright, flavorful, and layered. It’s easy to see why this is a must-order starter.

For entrées, Randie chose the Birria tacos with charro beans, and they were absolutely outstanding. The tacos were rich, tender, and deeply seasoned, with every bite melting in your mouth. They were the best Birria tacos I’ve ever had. The charro beans were equally impressive—hearty, smoky, and perfectly balanced as a side.

I ordered the Tacos de Ensenada, and they might just be some of the best Baja-style tacos I’ve had in Texas. The combination of fried mahi and fried shrimp was light yet crispy, and the toppings elevated the dish even further. The cabbage curtido brought a fresh, tangy crunch, while the chipotle aioli added a creamy, smoky heat that tied everything together beautifully.

We also shared elote and Spanish rice, both of which tasted freshly prepared and full of flavor. The elote had the perfect char and seasoning, and the Spanish rice was fluffy, aromatic, and a perfect complement to the meal.

To finish, we indulged in the strawberry shortcake, and it was the sweetest ending possible—fresh strawberries, light cake, and just the right amount of cream to keep it decadent without being too heavy.

Overall, Letty’s Mexican Cocina delivers on every level—beautiful décor, inviting atmosphere, and food that feels vibrant, fresh, and made with care. It’s a place that makes you want to return again and again to explore more of the menu.

Looking for a new(ish) sweet spot? We were and found the Peach Cobbler Factory-Humble. Before you go hating on “hot fruit”, just know this place has way more than just peach cobbler. Their menu is full of sweet treats like brownies, banana pudding, cinnamon rolls, shakes, and so much more!

Here’s what we got!

🧔🏻‍♂️ Cinnamon Peach Praline Cobbler w/ Vanilla ice cream.
Cobbler was great. Just the right amount of praline and cinnamon flavor that paired nicely with the peach. Ice cream was ok…would have liked that to have been a little better.

⚾️ Churros with Nutella
Made fresh and were fantastic! Tego couldn’t eat them all so we had plenty to go around. Hot out of the fryer that you could dunk into a container of Nutella. Yum!!

💃Cinnamon Roll with Nutella topping
Randie will tell you this was the star of the show. The icing wasn’t too sweet and paired nicely with the Nutella. She’ll probably have to get this again next time we come back to this place!

Overall we loved it. It’s a smaller shop and had a little bit of a line, but the workers made the process smooth! I’m trying the banana pudding shake next time!! My pictures didn’t do this place justice!!
