International fish farming operations, particularly in low-to middle-income countries (LMIC), have been identified as a primary source of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), where microorganisms become more resistant to combative drugs, according to Seafood Source.

While researchers acknowledge that more farmed fish is potentially necessary to feed a growing global population, they simultaneously agreed that multiple fish farms around the globe suffered from many health risks that negatively impact the fish, such as overcrowded cages, increased water use, diseases, and subsequent overuse of antimicrobial drugs to combat said diseases.

This continued drug use could contribute to increased rates of AMR, making it harder to combat bacteria and potentially spread diseases.
