I know all of you are anxiously awaiting another hay post. Well here it is.😁
I always like to get our spring alfalfa/orchard grass planted as early in the spring as I can. The first picture was planted the first of May, the other 2 pictures were planted in March. I should get 2 cuttings from the March planted alfalfa/orchard grass, and only 1 cutting from the Early May planting. April rains delayed planting.
Did you know that it cost $350 - $450/acre before land cost to plant a field of alfalfa orchard grass? Cost vary depending on seed, and fertilizer needs.
Did you know most ag lending banks will not loan operating funds to establish a hay field? Why? Because a hay crop can not be insured by federal crop insurance like grain crops.
Did you know most ag lending banks will not recognize the full cash value of an established hay field on a balance sheet?
This is why so few full time farmers grow hay crops, because of lack of insurance for risk, and lending institutions lending protocols.
And then there is me, when everyone runs left, go right!

Our Dura-berm is being hauled in for the new hay barn. 240 tons worth. The builders are behind due to weather. And it seems like the speed of life just hit high axle. Hopefully I'll finish planting spring seeded hay this afternoon, then onto planting soybeans, and hopefully mowing hay. God is good!
