One hundred quail were released Friday at the Hempstead Harbor Nature Trail, where officials say the birds can play an important role in controlling the tick population.

Pheasant Fact !

In mid-July, many state wildlife agencies begin their annual pheasant brood counts. The counts help determine how productive the hens were, and if the population is up or down from last year. Brood routes established to sample the bird's main range within a state, have been run for decades. Hens with young, hens without young and roosters are counted along these routes.

Generally, the average number of chicks in a brood is not determined while driving this route. To stop and count chicks requires too much time, and the route must be completed before two hours after sunrise. So brood size is determined at other times of the day when each brood can be flushed for an accurate count. The number this year is then compared to last year to show productivity per nest.
