If you are looking to become a beekeeper this year, now is an excellent time to begin preparations including purchasing equipment , supplies, and bees. To ensure availability, it is essential to order bees promptly, as suppliers may sell out quickly. There are two primary options for obtaining bees: package bees and nuc colonies.

Packages are wooden or plastic crates containing approximately 3 pounds of bees, a caged queen, and sugar syrup. These are typically available for pickup in March or April and must be installed into a hive within a day. When purchasing a package there are a few different options regarding breed. Each breed has different benefits such as winter hardiness, temperament or mite resistance. Make sure to take some time researching the best option for you. Personally, I have been happy with Randy Oliver, Saskatraz and Carnolian. I will produce a video tutorial illustrating the installation process when time permits.

Nuc colonies, on the other hand, are established colonies with 4-5 frames of bees, drawn comb, brood, honey, and pollen. Frames need to be transferred to a 10-frame hive body within a few days of receipt. Nucs are typically ready for pick up in may or June.

Find a trusted source when purchasing packages and/or nucs. It is important to take home healthy bees free of disease and pests!
