Raising quail and meat rabbits has taught me that food doesn’t start at the grocery store—it starts with responsibility.
These animals depend on me every day for clean housing, fresh water, good feed, and calm handling. In return, they provide something incredibly meaningful: a direct connection to where food comes from. Raising your own meat isn’t about convenience or aesthetics; it’s about commitment.
An important part of that commitment is understanding dispatching. It’s not the easiest part, and it shouldn’t be. Approaching it with respect, preparation, and care is essential. Humane handling and calm conditions matter just as much at the end of an animal’s life as they do throughout it. Treating that moment seriously reinforces gratitude rather than detachment.
Quail and rabbits are efficient, quiet, and well-suited for small-scale or backyard homesteading. They mature quickly, require less space than larger livestock, and can be raised sustainably when done correctly. But more than that, they teach patience, consistency, and accountability.
Raising and dispatching your own animals changes how you see food. It encourages less waste, more appreciation, and a deeper respect for life. It’s not for everyone—and that’s okay—but for those who choose this path, it’s a powerful reminder that ethical food begins long before it reaches the plate.

Greatful our grandsons come hangout on the farm with us and their parents teach them to garden, trap, hunt and fish.. they have helped with the dispatching process start to finish. Helped harvest from the gardens. With hay and have watched tiny dinosaurs hatch from the egg. They love fishing! 🫶
